Job description

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

As Ursa Major expands into the realm of solid propulsion, we’re assembling the most innovative and nimble team in order to unseat the reigning players.  We’re applying the latest technologies to an outdated business model that improves cost, lead time, and flexibility without impacting reliability.  We must continue to build in-house capabilities in energetics, ballistics, and composites with an emphasis on novel designs focused on manufacturability and high-rate scalability.

Job Overview:

Ursa Major is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Test Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing tests for our solid rocket motors. This role requires a deep understanding of rocket propulsion systems, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Test Planning and Design:
    • Develop detailed test plans and procedures for solid rocket motors.
    • Design and implement test setups, including instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
    • Ensure all test setups comply with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Test Execution:
    • Conduct static fire tests and other performance tests on solid rocket motors.
    • Monitor tests in real-time, ensuring proper operation and data collection.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during testing.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Analyze test data to evaluate the performance and reliability of solid rocket motors.
    • Generate comprehensive test reports and documentation.
    • Provide recommendations for design improvements based on test results.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with design engineers to understand testing requirements and objectives.
    • Communicate test results and insights to cross-functional teams.
    • Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to ensure test readiness.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
    • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of experience in rocket motor testing or a related field.
    • Hands-on experience with solid rocket motor testing is highly desirable.
    • Experience with data acquisition systems and instrumentation.
  • Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge:
    • In-depth understanding of solid rocket propulsion principles.
    • Familiarity with safety and regulatory requirements for rocket testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with test stand design and operation.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for rocket testing.
  • Familiarity with environmental testing conditions (e.g., vibration, thermal).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a test facility environment, which may include exposure to loud noises, hazardous materials, and outdoor conditions.
  • Capability to lift and handle equipment up to 50 lbs.
