Job description

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

As Ursa Major expands into the realm of solid propulsion, we’re assembling the most innovative and nimble team in order to unseat the reigning players.  We’re applying the latest technologies to an outdated business model that improves cost, lead time, and flexibility without impacting reliability.  We must continue to build in-house capabilities in energetics, ballistics, and composites with an emphasis on novel designs focused on manufacturability and high-rate scalability.

Position Overview: As a Solid Rocket Motor Manufacturing Engineer at Ursa Major, you will play a crucial role in the production of cutting-edge solid rocket motors. You will be responsible for overseeing the manufacturing process, ensuring product quality, and optimizing production efficiency. This position requires a strong background in aerospace engineering, materials science, and hands-on experience with solid rocket motor manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and optimize manufacturing processes for solid rocket motors.
  • Oversee the production of solid rocket motors, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and performance standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, testing, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless integration of manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and implement process control methods to monitor and improve production efficiency and product consistency.
  • Conduct failure analysis and root cause investigations to address manufacturing defects and improve product reliability.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices in rocket motor manufacturing.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation of manufacturing processes, procedures, and specifications.
  • Train and mentor manufacturing technicians and junior engineers in best practices and safety protocols.
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in materials, manufacturing techniques, and aerospace industry trends.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Experience in solid rocket motor manufacturing or a related aerospace manufacturing field.
  • Strong understanding of solid rocket motor design, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and manufacturing process simulation tools.
  • Experience with process control, quality assurance, and failure analysis methodologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to rocket motor manufacturing (e.g., NASA, DoD, ASTM).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with composite materials and propellant processing.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience with automated manufacturing systems and equipment.
