The Communication Technologies and Engineering Division (CTED) represents the disciplines of communications, networking, and PNT (Position, Navigation, and Timing) in support of space missions, along with their enabling technologies. In our domain, CTED projects comprise all aspects, from architectures to prototypes to implementation, theoretical to hands-on.  Our engineers work directly with corporate and U.S. Government customers to ensure robust and resilient communications.

We are looking to hire a Network Modeling and Simulation Engineer to provide support in the Network/Systems Department (NSD) to lead and perform trade studies, analyses, and simulations of future space network architectures. Moreover, your role will provide critical insight and feedback to government customers to optimize the overall communications performance of terrestrial, satellite, launch vehicle, and ground-based systems. 

 

Work Model: This role may have the flexibility to support in a hybrid work model; however, the majority will be required onsite in El Segundo, CA. 

 

What You’ll Be Doing 

Job Summary: 

  • Lead/participate in multi-disciplinary engineering teams in development and analysis of future network architectures and requirements 

  • Analyze and simulate complex network architectures and protocols 

  • Engage in systems architecture definition, development, analysis, modeling & simulation, and prototype development/validation 

  • Innovate through specialized technical studies and internal research and development (R&D) projects to develop the next generation of Space and Ground network concepts, architectures, and technologies 

  • Coordinate tasks in technical meetings for SSC, NRO, and Civil & Commercial customers working with a diverse team comprising military officers and Government civilians, prime contractors, SE&I contractors and other FFRDCs 

  • Evaluate and develop multiple access communications or engineering technologies 

  • Support development and sustainment of core network simulation, emulation, and modeling capabilities 

 

What You Need to be Successful - Engineering Specialist

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline 

  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience in data analysis, OSI and TCP/IP models and in network design, analysis, and modeling & simulation 

  • Deep knowledge of routing and switching protocols 

  • Experience in software development in Python or C/C++ 

  • Ability to present results effectively in briefings and technical reports 

  • Willing to travel, as needed (up to 10%) 

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. Government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance 

 

How You Can Stand Out  

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these: 

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another related discipline from an accredited university 

  • Expert level knowledge of network testbed development and experience with network emulation/simulation  

  • Operational experience with virtualization and enterprise computing platforms

  • Relevant experience with military and commercial satellite communication systems and network engineering 

  • Knowledge of inter-satellite cross-links and laser optical communication technologies 

  • Experience in project management/development, ideally leading multi-disciplinary teams 

  • Working knowledge of Digital Engineering/Model Based Systems Engineering methods

  • Familiarity with Software Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN) 

  • Insight into software frameworks for Software Defined Radios (SDR) such as GNU Radio, embedded system architecture, RF design and spectrum management, GPS/GNSS and other localization technologies/concepts 

  • Knowledge of system acquisition development, from requirements definition to implementation and testing 

  • Possess a current and active U.S. Government Security Clearance – Top Secret level
