Job description
The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation’s space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space— delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you’ll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.
At Aerospace, we are committed to providing an inclusive and diverse workplace for all employees to share in our common passion and aspiration – to carry out a mission much bigger than ourselves.
The Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders on space architectures, policy and strategy, developmental planning, system of systems engineering, and threat reduction to help shape future space missions across the national security space enterprise. DSG directly supports major customers, including United States Space Force, United States Space Command, Air Force Materiel Command, and senior leadership at the Pentagon.
This is a government-facing role for which you’ll provide expertise in electromagnetic warfare to the United States Space Force (USSF). You’ll work with USSF members of Space Delta 3 (DEL 3), the USSF’s operational space EW forces. In this role, you’ll have the important charter to strengthen the USSF’s space EW combat-readiness. The acquisition efforts within the EW Integrated Mission Delta (IMD) are led by the Vice Commander of DEL 3. The IMD is focused on integrating operational and developmental perspectives. E.g., the IMD advises on how system modifications and future acquisitions can support operational needs. As such, you’ll have opportunities to shape the future of space EW. You’ll also be the first Aerospace person joining one of the first USSF IMDs, so you’ll also have an opportunity to scope your work with DEL 3 by proposing ways that you can contribute to their mission.
Work Model
This is an interactive, government-facing role that requires you to be 100% on-site during work hours. The work site is on Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado. Some travel is also required. Travel is expected to be around a few days per month, with variances from month to month that depend on mission needs.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Serve as the first dedicated Aerospace person contributing to DEL 3’s EW IMD
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with DEL 3 staff, Space Operations Command staff, the operational units within DEL 3, the USSF’s acquisition community, the USSF’s futures planning community, the USSF’s test and training community, other supporting contractors, and other members of Aerospace
- Develop and maintain technical expertise on USSF space EW systems
- Identify system gaps, opportunities, and engineering solutions
- Contribute to and lead systems engineering activities such as the following: development of concepts of operations and employment; requirements management through elicitation, documentation, and validation; verification; configuration management; risk management; data management; and decision analysis
- Represent integrated operational, acquisition, and futures planning perspectives in technical meetings and requirements documentation
- Identify and coordinate the work of other Aerospace subject matter experts from Aerospace’s Engineering & Technology Group to solve problems for DEL 3
- Regularly inform government stakeholders and Aerospace management on progress, plans, and system details through briefings and writing
- Ensure continuity of mission excellence by sharing knowledge with DEL 3 and mentoring other Aerospace employees
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical area such as electrical engineering or computer science
- 10 or more years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience
- Technical expertise in electronic communication systems, satellite communications, electromagnetic warfare, DoD force design, DoD acquisitions, or a combination thereof
- Excellent written and oral communication skills - clear, concise, and professional
- Ability to be tactfully persuasive using data and taking the time to understand the views of others
- This position requires an active TS/SCI security clearance and the ability to be granted and maintain accesses to Special Access Programs, which are issued by the US government. US citizenship is a minimum requirement to obtain a security clearance and receive additional accesses.
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- A high level of technical expertise in satellite communications and electromagnetic warfare
- An advanced degree in a relevant technical subject area
- Familiarity with DoD and USSF processes and standards, such as for acquisition
- Experience with systems engineering processes such as requirements writing and verification
- Familiarity with the Counter Communications System (CCS) or other space EW systems
- Current or previous accesses to Special Access Programs
