Job description

Working for Open Cosmos

Aim high, go beyond!

At Open Cosmos we are solving the world’s biggest challenges from space, providing businesses, governments and researchers access to more readily available information than ever before - ready for the challenge? Then read on…

Working in the Ground Segment Team

Our team is responsible for all ground-side software which gathers and disseminates data from existing & future satellite fleets to our customers. We follow a highly agile methodology, we look for suggestions & contributions from all team members, and we’re not afraid to try new ways of working when we see an opportunity for improvement. Our data engineer will work highly-collaboratively alongside software engineers, taking responsibility for a variety of data critical to our and our customers’ commercial success.

What will you be doing?

At Open Cosmos our goal is to offer, through our platform EO (Earth observation) data, IoT data, and other data types with both temporal and spatial components.

For these data sources, you’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining ingestion/processing pipelines, company standards for these data and associated metadata, monitoring the health of these data/pipelines and ensuring their conformance to these standards.

You’ll find solutions which balance what data products our customers find most convenient with what fits best in the framework/technical-detail of our systems (or propose architectural changes to improve how we manage data).

There will be lots of continuous learning as new shapes of data need to be brought into the platform, requiring processing techniques not yet implemented in our workflows.

What you need to be successful

We’re more interested in what you can do than being dogmatic about your background! We’d love to take a look at your CV even if you’re not sure you tick all the boxes.

Should Haves

  • Most processing involves scripting/programming/working on the command line, so you’ll need to have some familiarity of how to use  these
  • Love for neat data - defining conventions and standards, ensuring items adhere to them
  • End-User-Needs focus for how data are processed, presented and made available
  • Ability to work & learn independently, and communicate effectively with the rest of the team to overcome blocking issues together

Nice to Haves

  • Can administrate data via (REST) APIs or in databases (Postgres in particular)
  • Knowledge of satellite imagery/data sources and how to process them
