Position Description:

 

Position Summary

The Green Bank Observatory (GBO) is committed to maintaining one of the world’s most accomplished observatory while developing new technology to enable further research in radio astronomy. The GBO has an opportunity for experienced Maintenance Trainees in our Maintenance Division in Green Bank, WV. Under general supervision and as part of a diverse and active team, the Maintenance Trainee will provide semi-skilled tasks common to maintenance and construction trades.

 

These positions will be based at the Green Bank Observatory and are initially for a 12 week period.

 

What You Will be Doing:

Under general supervision and instruction, essential duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Cutting lawns trims and edges around walks, beds, and walls.
  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and remove leaves, branches or twigs
  • Cleans grounds and removes litter.
  • Works as part of Plant Maintenance and assists any or all other areas needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both inside and outside in all weather conditions; near moving mechanical parts; and occasionally works at heights above 5 feet.

 

Who You Are:

  • You have a high school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Competency Summary

Candidates must have the ability to work independently and reliably under general supervision. The employee must be able to operate a variety of vehicles including but not limited to lawn mowers, power equipment, and other light duty equipment.

 

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in a high noise area with PPE. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work at heights above 5 feet.

 

Additional Requirements

 

  • You must be 18 years of age
  • You must have a valid driver’s license

 

Safety Sensitive

The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
