Summary

Firefly Instrumentation and Control Technicians within the launch group are responsible for the installation and maintenance of launch site instrumentation and control systems. You will work as part of a small cross-functional team requiring minimal supervision, identify & communicate system issues/risks, troubleshoot & repair equipment, review & execute procedures, and propose improvements to all portions of Launch Site electrical, DCS/SCADA, and communication systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs work according to policy, procedures, and specifications. Provides feedback on these documents for accuracy & efficiency.
  • Constructs launch data acquisition and SCADA systems from data and control I/O diagrams, instrument and control cable schedules, instrument loop diagrams, junction box wiring diagrams, control panel layout and wiring diagrams.
  • Installs, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs major electronic systems and peripheral devices per manufacturer's specification, engineering guidance, and industry best practices.
  • Understands complex schematics, wiring diagrams and shop drawings for the purpose of installation, troubleshooting, and repairing of components.
  • Troubleshoots, installs, and calibrates various instruments, including ultrasonic level transmitters, flow meters, pressure transducers, thermocouples and other temperature devices, differential pressure transducers, strain gauges, accelerometers, and microphones.
  • Utilizes a wide range of test equipment, including data recorders, computers, PC based software analyzer programs, oscilloscopes, data analyzers, analog and digital multi-meters, and other test equipment, while performing tests to identify problems and to maintain equipment to performance standards.
  • Perform Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) of equipment and circuits for test or repair and safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Route and terminates cables using various wire stripping, crimping tools, and connector types.
  • Performs all work in compliance with OSHA, NEC, IEEE, and other appropriate regulations.
  • Performs soldering on electronic components.
  • Performs basic mechanical repairs as required.
  • Maintains and repairs network communications systems (i.e. serial buses, fiber networks, Ethernet networks and network peripherals).
  • Maintains and repairs complete systems and repair/replace subcomponents as required.
  • Performs launch site checkouts for test and launch operations and supports launch day Red Team.
  • Travels to test and launch sites as required to support the overall program.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 3+ years of aerospace or industrial process, instrumentation and controls experience.
  • Ability to correctly interpret complex electrical drawings and prints.
  • Ability to correctly interpret process flow diagrams (P&ID, schematics, cause & effect chart, control narrative, instrument index).
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and numerous software applications such as Excel, Word, MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, etc.
  • Self-starter that is service-oriented to help the team drive efficient execution in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with industrial communications and control specific networking philosophies (i.e. ModbusTCP/IP & RTU, RS-485, RS-232).
  • Familiarity with NFPA, NEC, UL and ISA codes and electrical codes and requirements.
  • Ability to promptly & correctly document and communicate efforts via ticketing system (i.e. Jira)

Preferred Qualifications

  • AIAA or DoD Electronic Principles certifications
  • Military/Trade School Certificate or Associate degree in instrumentation, control technology, electrical systems, or related field
  • 5+ years of aerospace or industrial process, instrumentation and controls experience
  • Working knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), including IEC 61131-3 compliant languages
  • Prior experience with Fiber Optics, Supervisory control and data acquisition systems and licensed and unlicensed radio systems.
  • Working knowledge of multiple bus architectures (PCI/PCIe, PXI/PXIe, GPIB, Serial, USB, etc.) and data communication technologies.
  • Prior experience creating and updating schematics, wiring diagrams and shop drawings.
  • Electrical experience in the following: VFD/Motor starter remote startups and configuration via analog and relay logic, Ability to check motor windings with Megger/Ohmmeter.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to pass Space Force background check for Cape Canaveral SFS, FL and Vandenberg SFB, CA
  • Up to 25% travel required.
  • Must be comfortable stooping and bending, as well as standing for long periods of time to support test and launch day operations.
  • Ability to operate machinery such as forklifts and boom lifts a plus.
  • Must be able to work in varying climate environments, heat, cold, rain.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds unassisted.
