Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Staff Electrical Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Huntsville, AL.

Position Overview:

The selected Staff Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for cradle-to-grave launch vehicle-centric hardware electrical design engineering, supporting the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) Weapons Systems (GWS) Ground Support Systems (GSS) product team. This entails being a part of the hardware development for multiple technical baselines and the accompanying operations planning, hands-on design engineering, ground support development, analysis, testing, integration, and launch/retrofit operations planning.

Job Duties:

Perform analysis/research, hardware requirements management, electrical design engineering, and testing of complex designs.  Perform comprehensive review of internal, external and range requirements to support launch vehicle system level design and vehicle subsystem design. Develop design solutions.  Perform detailed analyses to support/verify those designs and support/conduct briefings to management, the engineering community, and customers.  Lead development, coordination, and execution of test programs required to verify the design.  Oversee component supplier design, analysis, manufacture, and test. Lead troubleshooting efforts and comprehensive failure investigations. Collaborate early and often with other engineering disciplines and operations/manufacturing groups.  

Expectations Include:

  • Expert level designs requirements-driven hardware and electrical component solutions.
  • Mastery of design concepts and criteria for more complex problems.
  • Expert application of electrical engineering principles to adapt or improve upon heritage features from previous successful designs of a similar nature.
  • Perform qualification (including environmental) testing, characterization testing, troubleshooting, and test data review of completed designs.
  • Derives requirements through multiple sources of documentation and design meetings.
  • Evaluate uncertainty and risks associated with requirements and designs.
  • Prepares and presents HW / electrical engineering materials for requirements, design and various milestone reviews.
  • Schematic development and interpretation.
  • Circuit design, signal monitoring, fault isolation.
  • Perform data analysis to identify trends that may indicate out of tolerance or degraded part performance.
  • Perform testing to characterize off-nominal behavior of components.
  • Failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA) considerations.
  • Lead / develop impact assessments and construct comparative analyses.
  • Provides inputs into bill of materials (BOMs) and evaluates commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts for compliance.
  • Implements innovations and thoroughly communicates information necessary to meet or exceed customer needs.
  • Balances technical solutions with contractual, cost, and schedule considerations
  • Constructive team leader and team contributor.
  • Act with safety as your number one priority through every aspect of the role.

Essential Functions: 

  • Drives advanced portions of the lifecycle of hardware development to include requirements definition, design, integration, and deployment.
  • Researches, develops, designs and tests electrical components and equipment systems.
  • Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts.
  • Work on unusually complex technical problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with teammates and customer representatives.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 14 years of related experience, or a Master's Degree in a STEM discipline and 12 years of related experience, or 9 years of experience with a PhD.
  • Prior experience with the design, test, and integration and deployment of electrical components, electrical ground support equipment (EGSE), and subsystems.
  • Requirements-driven hardware design; circuitry design.
  • Demonstrated expert-level understanding and application of company electrical engineering technical standards.
  • Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts.
  • Work on unusually complex technical problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious.
  • Ability to travel at least 10% to support business needs.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to support an in-person / closed-area work environment; this is not a remote work position.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the DoD secret level; and a minimum of an interim secret clearance will be required to start.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Active Secret Security Clearance, or higher preferred.
  • Release of engineering documentation including technical drawings, specifications, and test procedures.
  • Burndown of non-conformances and/or root cause failure analysis of electronic systems.
  • Problem solving not only for technical issues, but also for schedule, cost, resource and other project challenges.
  • Mentoring and cross-training team members across a diverse set of technologies and electrical system architectures used to meet customer requirements.
  • Experience using analytical software tools, such as MATLAB or Python, to analyze and reduce data to identify key characteristics and trends.
  • LabVIEW programming and National Instruments (NI) hardware and software products.
  • LabVIEW FPGA development experience.
  • DOORS and/or CAMEO exposure.
  • Experience with classified test systems or systems subject to cyber security policies and risk management framework (RMF).
  • Experience with telemetry systems.
  • Hardware / Software integration and testing.
  • Experience with mission critical and safety critical systems, components, connectors, cables, etc.   
  • Familiarity with Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Core Standards: MDA-QS-001-MAP, MDA-QS-003-PMAP, MDA Instruction 5000.20-INS (ETR Process).
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-1901A, MIL-STD-882, EWR-127, RCC 319, RCC 324, DoDEA 8510.01, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3ab, ECSS-ST-50-11C.
  • Familiarity with the GMD domain, GMD Launch Support Systems hardware, and/or DoD programs involved in autonomous vehicle launch support.

Salary Range: $157,500.00 - $236,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
