Job description

The Business Resource Center (BRC) provides administrative and professional business services for Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and our parent organization, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA). The Accounting Department, within BRC, is seeking an Accounts Payable Supervisor to oversee the Accounts Payable team and travel-related activities.                                                                

Essential Functions:                                                                                     

    • Supervise the Accounts Payable team to ensure timely processing of vendor invoices, check requests and expense reports.
    • Leads in the training and development of Accounts Payable staff.
    • Oversees and manages all travel-related activities including customer relations with our external travel agency and enforcing/communicating internal policies and procedures.
    • Responsible for maintaining up-to-date procedures for AP functions and regularly assesses procedures for internal control changes and federal compliance.
    • Manages the day-to-day activities of the Accounts Payable activities, including; internal and external inquiries, investigating discrepancies, policy/compliance enforcement and others.
    • Works with the Branch Manager of Accounting on Accounts Payable responsibilities and leads in the planning/scheduling of Accounts Payable assignments.
    • Performs account reconciliations and analysis related to Accounts Payable and other areas as assigned by the Branch Manager of Accounting.
    • Acts as a primary resource on Accounts Payable functions for internal and external stakeholders.                                             
    • Works closely with other branches/divisions on issues and resolutions impacting Accounts Payable areas.               
    • Participates in annual external financial audits.
    • Acts as a primary resource during accounting system upgrades and/or implementations.                                                                                                         
    • Ensures accounting records are complete and accurate for month-end and year-end activities.                            

Required Education, Experience, Skills and Qualifications:                                                 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field     
    • 7+ years of full accounting experience                                                        
    • Ability to anticipate and resolve complex problems, exercise sound judgement, and plan, organize, and prioritize multiple demands efficiently and effectively
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills                                                         
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team                                                 
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
    • Knowledge of concepts, theories, principles, and practices of general accounting (GAAP)
    • Supervisory experience

Preferred Education, Experience, Skills and Qualifications                                                                                                                             

  • Working knowledge of OMB Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (Uniform Guidance); Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR); and Cost Accounting Standards
  • Working knowledge of Deltek Costpoint
  • Certified Public Accountant or CPA candidate                                                            

The salary range is $90k to $115k.
