Job description

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.

Team:

The Machine Shop is the core subtractive manufacturing process team responsible for sourcing and developing in-house machining capabilities and meeting the challenging demands of the company. Our mission is to ensure the proper processes are developed, sustainable tools are built, and designs are created that support the manufacturing of the world’s first 3D printed rocket through implementing creative solutions and challenging the status-quo on the stale evolution of traditional rocket manufacturing.

What you’ll do:

The Machine Shop team is looking for a Senior level Manufacturing Engineer to champion machining development through novel methodology and effective communication with our vehicle and propulsion design and manufacturing teams. You will work collaboratively to implement process definition and process improvements with an eye on safety, quality and scalability to meet the future needs of the business.

You will be responsible for driving upstream changes that leverage the use of our additive and subtractive technology to enable rapid iteration.

You will communicate with multiple stakeholder groups and provide expert guidance on DFM and GD&T. Additionally, you will develop a deep understanding of process and flow through the machine shop and leverage your expertise to drive process and systematic improvements through teamwork and collaboration.

The nitty gritty:

  • Rocket experience not required!
  • Own technical product development and design for manufacturing for machined components for Aeon-R
  • Serve as key technical support on advanced manufacturing products and processes as they relate to subtractive manufacturing
  • Serve as key technical support on process and systematic improvements to increase safety, quality, and scalability
  • Continuously improve the organization’s approach to machining development
  • Leverage your expertise to drive consistency and alignment across multiple departments

What you need to know:

  • Minimum BS in Engineering or comparable STEM field
  • Minimum 6+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment or related role
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T and DFM as related to machining and assembly
  • Deep understanding of production systems and requirements, especially around implementation of new systems and processes
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively and influence others outside of your organization
  • Excellent communication skills

NOTE: Research suggests that women and BIPOC individuals may self-select out of opportunities if they think they do not meet 100% of the job requirements. We strongly encourage anyone who believes they have the skills, talent and motivation to succeed in this role to apply.

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing systems
  • Experience with automation for machine tending
  • Deep understanding of machining operations such as multi-axis CNC system setup, programming, tooling, and fixture designs
  • Experience machining 3D printed hardware
  • Experience with the transition from development to production
