Job description
Honeybee Robotics has been at the forefront of robotics for over 40 years, establishing ourselves as pioneers in developing novel exploration systems for the most extreme planetary environments. At our Southern California location, we look to "Touch Life" by supporting planetary science, including every NASA Mars rover since Spirit and Opportunity. We aim to "Mine the Sky" through the development of practical In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) solutions. We search for technically brilliant individuals in engineering, software, and support fields who take ownership of their work, enjoy collaborating in teams, and have a laser focus on the details that drive excellence.
Honeybee Robotics is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer. In this role, you will report directly to the Avionics Manager, interfacing with customers and inter-disciplinary project teams to develop electrical components and avionics systems and provide organization-wide technical leadership. You are responsible for flight avionics development, sample acquisition, handling devices, and other instruments used in planetary exploration and space applications.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a technical leader within the organization, mentoring junior engineers and helping to define and standardize processes
- Systems requirements definition and analog and digital circuit design for autonomous spacecraft instruments
- Design, manufacturing, and checkout of custom high-reliability PCBs for various avionics applications
- Harness design and assembly instructions for high-reliability applications
- Electrical ground support equipment (EGSE) design and documentation
- Analysis and test planning, execution, and data review for verification of requirements for electrical systems
- Develop and generate work instruction packages for manufacturing and testing
- Support R&D and flight projects through all phases of development and delivery
- Proactively identify roadblocks to technical progress and take steps to mitigate them
- Provide subject matter expertise in flight avionics and electrical components, consulting with project teams and reviewing designs and test plans of electrical-engineering peers
Required Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field
- 5+ years in spacecraft system design (Power, Motion, Propulsion, Telemetry / Command) and 8+ years general engineering experience
- Familiarity with EEE-INST-002 parts classification, selection of radiation-hardness-assured components, and radiation-mitigation strategies
Proficiency in most of the following:
- Worst-case analysis, circuit Finite Element Analysis, and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Design and application of digital communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, RS-422, RS-232, CAN
- Power system design, specifically Buck/Boost and LDO topologies and distributed grounding schemes
- Low-noise analog design for mixed sensor types (PRT, thermocouple, photodiode, etc)
Experience or familiarity with most of the following:
- High-voltage electrical systems (120V+) and battery technologies used on spacecraft
- Execution of environmental tests as per standards such as MIL-STD-461 or GSFC-STD-7000
- IPC-JSTD-001 requirements soldered electronic assemblies (inspection and operation)
- NASA 8739.4 harnessing standard and general requirements for harness design
- Motor drive design for Brushless DC (BLDC) motors
- FPGA- or MCU-based embedded system design
- Proficient in using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, electronic loads, and LCR meters
- Experience with Altium schematic capture and PCB layout tool or equivalent, and Microsoft Visio or similar tool
- Strong communication skills and experience presenting technical detail to external customers
- Detail-oriented with an emphasis on design documentation and summary report generation
- Experience as a people leader and mentor is highly desirable

Our compensation strategy takes into account various factors, including education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market alignment. The position is available at multiple levels, and the corresponding salary ranges are as follows:
Electrical Engineer I: $109,500-134,000
Electrical Engineer II: $127,000-156,000
Electrical Engineer III: $152,000-189,000
See your work make an impact on some of the most exciting space missions, including major subsystems of NASA's upcoming Dragonfly, VIPER, and Mars Sample Return missions. Work alongside with the best and the brightest, including our partners across the aerospace industry. In a few short years, your contributions will allow you to point to Mars, the Moon, or Saturn's moon Titan, and say, "I did that!"
