Requirements

Leading a team of experienced systems specialists for a next generation satellite communications product. Deep experience of systems engineering methodologies managing the flowdown of specifications from Market requirements to detailed technical specifications using proven systems methodology.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The VP of Systems Engineering will define, develop and manage all aspects of the critical systems engineering for a range of innovative end-user terminals for satellite communications. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Engineering and working closely with peers across other engineering disciplines, s/he will have a broad perspective and understanding of satellite or related communications engineering with a view of overseeing and ensuring the successful introduction and integration of new systems. The Director of Systems Engineering, along with the other Engineering Directors, will be jointly responsible to the SVP Engineering for ensuring that the product vision is realized through excellence in execution such that product lifetime quality metrics, manufacturable cost and performance goals are all met, in programs that are delivered within the project budget and on schedule. A key business need will be the dissemination of product requirements into system and subsystem specifications from RF to baseband. The Director of Systems Engineering will evaluate, plan, and implement the company processes, disciplines, and software tools for excellent systems engineering. Related responsibilities include: systems design; systems analysis; adherence to recognized and disciplined generation of top-level specifications and their proper flow down to subsystems; validation; coordination with integration and test teams to ensure the successful interoperation of all subsystems including RF, beam tracking and control, modem integration and interfaces, signal processing, mechanical, packaging, environmental, thermal management, and reliability. A good understanding of overall communications terminal requirements is essential.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

The VP of Systems Engineering will have experience in building and leading a team in the development of complex systems, with strong managerial and technical capability. Desirable qualities include familiarity with procedures for achieving product interoperability and connectivity with other systems on aeronautical, maritime and land mobility platforms; modem integration with a dynamically tracking SATCOM terminal. Industry standard certifications for commercial and military Satcoms, regulatory and reliability approvals. familiarity with wired and wireless terrestrial communication channels. Regulatory compliance should include specialist areas such as for interference mitigation. The Director of Systems Engineering will have strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills, enabling effective coordination among subsystem design, integration, manufacturing, and test teams. The Director of Systems Engineering is expected to bring a high degree of creativity and problem-solving capability to search outside the box for new solutions to questions in the design, assembly, and mass production of a cost-effective Satcom terminal. In addition, technical leadership is expected in the areas of analysis of complex antenna systems for all-electronic antenna systems and motion-controlled stabilized platforms, and monitoring and maintaining trends of performance across multiple product lines and customer development projects.

Continue to build and manage a world class systems engineering team that has responsibility for requirement and interface management, configuration and change management, document control within the greater engineering organization.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and report on the daily activities of the Systems Engineering team to deliver designs and products on time and on budget
  • Build a Systems Engineering team that facilitates scale and growth in line with company objectives
  • Deliver technology and products that meet performance, cost and quality metrics
  • Manage the systems design and analysis for all products
  • Manage the link, cost, and power budgets for all products
  • Manage the product implementation configurations and documentation
  • Work with the product management team and Engineering leads to generate top-level specifications and properly distribute down to subsystems
  • Coordinate with integration and test teams to ensure the successful interoperation of all subsystems
  • These include RF
  • Beam tracking and control
  • Modem integration and interfaces
  • Signal processing
  • Mechanical engineering design and integrity
  • Packaging requirements
  • Environmental requirements, certification of products under electrical, environmental, and operational standards including regulatory and reliability
  • Thermal management
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in the areas of analysis, design, and performance of the systems within our terminal products
  • Implement, manage, and control of product configuration
  • Requirements, documentation, and change control processes within the organization
  • Ability to manage multiple programs/products simultaneously and able to manage through times of dynamic priorities
  • Provide effective and efficient design support during conceptual design, detailed design, integration, and test phases of a product development program, with the goal of achieving project completion on time and on budget
  • Prepare and present design and analysis summary material during internal and external design reviews
  • Contributes towards Company design procedures and corporate policies
  • Other tasks, as assigned from time to time

Experience and Skills:

  • BS or MS in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline with 10+ years of experience in the fields of Systems Engineering for satellite and/or terrestrial communications and terminals, including modem integration
  • Strong leadership ability, Strong communications skills, ability to translate product requirements and specifications into system and subsystem requirements and specifications.
  • Experienced in writing design and performance reports and summaries, technically proficient in MS Office products

Other Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate calmly in a well thought out response, verbal and written, must have substantial problem-solving abilities. Extensive experience in avionic component development and release process (Desirable). Proficiency with standard scientific computing toolkits, languages, and packages, such as Matlab/Python etc. (Preferred but not essential)
  • Understanding of industry-standard software tools, interpersonal skills to effectively work with ALL.SPACE staff internally as well as working effectively with suppliers and customers. Ability to effectively present information in team meetings and design reviews as needed, experience in development and commercialization of SATCOM ground terminals (Desirable). Familiarity with procedures for achieving product interoperability and connectivity with other systems on aeronautical, maritime and land mobility platforms. Modem integration with a dynamically-tracking SATCOM terminal, familiarity with certification processes, familiarity with wired and wireless terrestrial communication channels. Understanding of regulatory compliance such as for interference mitigation, ability to adapt to changing priorities.
