The Position:

MDA is seeking an experienced Satellite Operations Engineer to join the multi-mission operations team in our St. Hubert, QC satellite operations centre.

MDA Geospatial Services Inc. is a leading global provider of advanced geospatial information solutions derived from the high-resolution RADARSAT satellites, commercial optical satellites, and aerial systems to an operationally-focused, global customer base. Leveraging over 20 years of experience, MDA is a recognized leader in the provision of satellite-based information, data products, and services to customers in a diverse range of markets that include Oil and Gas, Defence and Security, Disaster Management, Natural Resources, Mining, Aviation and Agriculture. 

MDA owns and operates the RADARSAT-2 Satellite and operates three satellites from the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM), on behalf of the Canadian Space Agency, from its control center at St. Hubert, near Montréal, Québec.  The Systems comprise Satellites (4 total) in Low-Earth (Polar Sun-synchronous) Orbit and Ground Segments for order handling, planning, and satellite control, and for SAR data reception, processing and distribution, archiving, cataloguing, and image quality maintenance. System operations are undertaken by MDA and through internal and subcontractor service contract arrangements.

MDA is also preparing for the launch (late 2025) and operation of its own CHORUS satellite, which is the next MDA SAR mission.

Job Responsibilities:

The Senior Engineer – Satellite Operations will lead key aspects of MDA’s multi-mission satellite operations including Management of Satellite Flight Operations for key missions including MDA’s RADARSAT-2, or upcoming CHORUS mission or CSA’s RCM.

  • MDA’s Satellite Flight Operations Management includes Ordering, Planning, Tasking, Spacecraft Engineering, Mission System Engineering, Flight Dynamics, and maintenance and operation of the ground control antenna system.
  • Provide Mission System Engineering (MSE) coordination, ensuring Satellite and Ground System risks are properly mitigated in a timely manner;
  • Planning, designing and overseeing projects; Strategize and manage project timelines;
  • Supervising technical team, hiring new talent, identifying training opportunities and career development strategies to support growth and retention within the team. Coordinate resource allocation with the various team leads. Provide recommendations to the Flight Operations manager.
  • Monitor and report system performance against defined metrics through aggregated statistics collected from the Ground Segment;
  • Promote and support continuous improvement processes and team mindset, striving to continuously improve satellite operation efficiency.
  • Define and/or adjust operations concepts, the development and/or review of automated procedures;
  • Coordination of system modifications, including their documentation, testing, approval, and implementation;
  • Communicate with and provide support to the operations staff; represent MDA in conferences or meeting.
  • Optimize the use of satellite resources while striving to achieve major stakeholder’s satisfaction.
  • Respond consistently to customers’ requests (both internal and external).
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements (experience/skills):

  • Degree of higher degree in numerate discipline, preferably in the areas of Aerospace, Engineering, Computer Science or Geography/Remote Sensing. Post graduate degree in other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields will also be considered;
  • At least 15 years post graduate experience in an operations environment, or systems development with exposure to spacecraft operations;
  • Strong aerospace engineering skills in area such as Spacecraft Bus, Payload and/or flight dynamic with solid understanding of ground segment component;
  • A flexible team player, with agility to work in a multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Working language is in English;
  • Willingness to be included in overnight and weekend "on-call" rotation to support anomaly decision and resolution process.  

Comments/Special Considerations:

  • Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the secret status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP)
  • The Senior Engineer will work as part of the MDA team at the MDA Control Centre, in the St. Hubert area, Quebec.
  • The candidate must be well organized and focused on priorities. He/she should be able to extract information from a vast source of documentation and to demonstrate initiative and leadership.
