This role is a part of Test & Flight Operations team, providing centralized support to Business Units with the focus on design, build and maintenance of the ground systems, test and launch facilities across multiple locations.

As part of a small, hardworking, and accomplished team of spacecraft pilots and operations engineers, you will work closely with spacecraft development and operations teams, leading and performing tasks to support spacecraft piloting operations throughout the full system lifecycle. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of the in-flight operations concept, vehicle development, piloting techniques and procedures, flight planning, and tools used to operate advanced spaceflight vehicles. You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Identify, derive, develop, and maintain spacecraft piloting requirements, including traceability and verification and validation approach, necessary to implement a design that meets objectives
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers representing flight vehicle systems, flight control operators, flight crews, partner organizations, and program management
  • Monitor the development of spacecraft systems as a senior representative of the piloting office, identifying issues that may affect in-flight operations, briefing status, and participating in technical study sessions
  • Help guide the planning, execution, and analysis of formal spacecraft piloting evaluations at Blue Origin and other facilities
  • Help guide the development of spacecraft piloting and manual control capabilities including development of hand controllers, cockpit displays, cockpit design, and flight software support of piloting functions
  • Exercise spacecraft piloting and evaluation skills to help guide the development and verification of manual control capabilities and handling qualities during all phases of flight including lunar landing and ascent, powered and coasting flight, proximity operations, and docking
  • Provide operations concept and design support to vehicle engineering organizations
  • Evaluate the design of astronaut-facing aspects of Blue Origin spacecraft and provide support for human-in-the-loop testing
  • Provide high level support to program management, vehicle development, and flight operations groups
  • Provide support for hazard analysis and risk management related to crew operations and crew-vehicle interfaces
  • Provide direct support to NASA personnel including flight crew, mission management, mission evaluation, and engineering teams

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in engineering or related technical field
  • 10+ years of aerospace industry experience in operations or human-centered system design
  • 5+ years of experience in space or aircraft flight operations
  • A strong systems engineering background
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in engineering or related technical field
  • 10+ years of experience in space or aircraft flight operations
  • Graduate of USAF, USN, or other SETP-recognized long course test pilot school
