Our vision is to expand and sustain humanity’s presence in space by developing a lunar economy built on the resources available on the Moon.
As the regional office of ispace inc., we are creating the first lunar resource exploration service by developing ispace’s next generation rovers that will prospect for lunar water and other resources. We are a small, international team motivated by the challenges of the Lunar Frontier and determined to achieve the company’s vision.
This is a unique opportunity to join a truly fascinating project to explore resources on the Moon. In this role you will join a small international team of engineers and will be primarily involved in the production and verification of our Micro Rovers and Exploration Rovers.
As an Instrument Specialist in the aerospace industry, you will play a pivotal role in the design, development and testing of precision instruments used in aerospace systems. Your responsibilities will be leading activities relating to instrument identification, selection, mission operation definition, testing and scientific/engineering requirement specification for rover missions.
The position is based in Luxembourg and reports to the Systems Group Manager and to the MD/Engineering Manager (CTO Group). It will closely collaborate with ispace EUROPE’s team members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designing and optimizing instrument specifications for lunar surface exploration and potential orbital missions, ensuring alignment with rover and spacecraft capabilities and mission objectives while collaborating closely with the engineering team.
- Serving as the instrument Principal Investigator (PI) for identified instrument suites, maintaining a deep understanding of each instrument's requirements and capabilities, translating them into engineering specifications, and liaising with business and science teams.
- Work closely with mission planners and scientists to ensure that instrument capabilities align with specific scientific goals and mission objectives.
- Engaging with customers and stakeholders to gather requirements and communicate instrument capabilities effectively within ispace, facilitating alignment with our business and engineering teams.
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies and advancements in space instrumentation, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement in our instrument suites.
- Leading the development and implementation of instrument testing procedures to validate performance under simulated lunar conditions.
- Participate in mission planning simulations to evaluate instrument performance in realistic lunar scenarios.
- Providing real-time operational support during flight missions, leveraging your expertise to troubleshoot instrument issues swiftly and make critical decisions under mission-critical conditions.
- Collaborating with the business development team to coordinate short-, medium, and long-term science strategy for the data and space resources business.
- Managing science data and conducting scientific analysis of acquired data to generate commercially valuable datasets from selected instrumentation.
- Contributing to requirements definition, ensuring that all requirements are well-understood by the engineers responsible for achieving the science and business objectives.
- Conducting basic system compatibility assessments for potential payload and instruments, facilitating configuration design studies between instrument providers and lander and rover teams.
- Supporting the creation of project documentation and other deliverables.
- Demonstrating expertise in lunar geology, scientific analysis, planetary science instrument design and ISRU (In-Situ Resource Utilization) processes
- Proactively identifying risks and issues, defining and managing mitigation plans, and being a vocal advocate for best practices.
- Occasional travel to ispace offices, vendor locations, and instrument provider sites, as well as representing ispace at events and conferences.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in an engineering or science field, such as earth/planetary sciences, remote sensing, geophysics, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in orbital and surface instruments for remote sensing and in-situ measurement, including interface design between instruments and broader engineering platforms.
- Experience in practical instrument operation, encompassing the design of appropriate instrument functional testing, calibration, and verification.
- Strong engineering acumen, enabling you to conduct basic systems engineering assessments and collaborate effectively with engineering specialists.
- A solid understanding of business cases and strategic planning.
- Practical experience in resource exploration, field geology/geophysics, remote sensing, spacecraft design, data analytics, or business development.
- Exceptional judgment and a keen understanding of the system-level impact of design choices.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Initiative, ownership, accountability, and a positive can-do attitude.
- Adaptability and comfort in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience in the space industry particularly in the development of scientific instruments for space missions across the full lifecycle from concept to deployment.
- Knowledge of spacecraft operations including commanding and monitoring spacecraft instruments.
- Experience as a Principal Investigator (PI) for a science mission.
- Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
- Experience in public outreach and education initiatives to engage the broader community in lunar exploration and space science
