At the NOIRLab’s Gemini Observatory we are looking for an intern to join the real-time software team at Gemini North Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii. 

The intern will work on a project using machine learning to predict faults and anomalies by analyzing our engineering data archive. They will be responsible for developing and implementing machine learning algorithms to analyze historical data, identify patterns, and predict potential failures and operational issues. This role requires a strong foundation in data science and machine learning, as well as an interest in astronomical equipment and operations. The intern will work closely with the real-time software team and other engineers to learn about telescope systems and to build the foundation needed for the proposed work.

The successful applicant will have excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and a drive to improve the performance and reliability of telescope and instrument systems.  The position is located at the Gemini North (GN) Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii.

Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Enthusiastic about exploring and evaluating new technologies
  • Studies of computer science, engineering or a related discipline.
  • Programming experience in Python
  • Knowledge and experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Experience with development on unix system environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. 
  • Troubleshooting skills including the ability to analyze and diagnose multiple interacting systems.  

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities

  • Experience using Machine Learning models 
  • Experience in object-oriented design and development experience in Python and other programming languages.
  • Experience with revision control systems like GIT.
  • User interface development experience in Java, QT, GTK+ or other toolkits.
  • Data analysis in Matlab, IDL or Python.
  • Knowledge of software design patterns.

The work of a Software Engineer Intern is mostly carried out in an office environment near sea level. Long periods of sitting may be required.  Given the nature of the observatory, occasional work at high elevation (Maunakea, 4200m) may be required.
