Job description
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.
As part of a multidisciplinary, hardworking, and diverse team, you will be the first line of engineering support for technical discrepancies on the avionics hardware and electrical subsystems of the New Shepard rocket. In preparation for a launch, you'll work closely with the vehicle maintenance team to diagnose discrepancies and identify corrective actions as well as author and review maintenance procedures. Being a standout colleague is a must; you will collaborate across team interfaces to understand and overcome logistics, supply chain, and resource challenges to deliver mission-ready vehicles. You must be organized and diligent in pushing issues to closure. The job will be based in Kent, WA with travel (15%) to the launch site in Texas.
We are looking for people to apply their technical expertise and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission is required!
We are seeking an experienced operations engineer who will:
- Provide technical expertise on the avionics hardware systems of the New Shepard launch vehicle and related ground support equipment (GSE).
- Support maintenance activities for New Shepard as required leading up to a launch.
- Disposition and investigate root cause of vehicle discrepancies.
- Support vehicle managers in assessing technical risk for readiness leading into a launch.
- Perform post-flight data reviews and tracking of all resulting anomalies.
- Author processes and procedures for launch operations as well as maintenance activities.
- Support integrated hardware testing.
- Communicate and partner with Avionics functional domain teams as needed for resolutions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in electrical or aerospace engineering or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience with engineering support of field operations and/or diagnosing avionics systems and hardware.
- Experience with aircraft/spacecraft schematics, wiring drawings, and electrical load analysis.
- Strong coordination and project management skills, to track, manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks.
- Excellent computer skills with the ability to rapidly learn and use a variety of software tools as needed.
- Proven ability with data reduction and analysis.
- Outstanding communication & interpersonal skills that foster positive professional relationships.
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience with engineering support of field operations and/or diagnosing avionics systems and hardware.
- Avionics system design experience.
- Power system fundamentals, including Lithium batteries, silicon devices (MOSFET, Diode…).
- Radio Frequency (RF) communications fundamentals.
- Experience with Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Failure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
- Experience with risk assessment, management, and mitigation.
