Job description
For those who dream of advancing our space in the Universe and on Earth, we’ll take you there.
MDA is an international space mission partner and robotics & space operations, satellite systems and Geointelligence pioneer with a 50-year story of firsts on and above the Earth. Today, we're leading the charge towards viable Moon colonies, enhanced Earth observation, communication in a hyper-connected world, and more.
We’re fueled by a pioneering spirit that carries us beyond. And together we enable highly skilled people to continually push boundaries and tackle big challenges requiring solutions that endure and inspire.
For more than four decades, human spaceflight has been supported by advanced robotics developed by MDA. We have combined complex robotics with control software to develop the Space Shuttle’s mission critical, robotic arms and the Mobile Servicing System (MSS) for the International Space Station (ISS). Today, MDA is developing sophisticated systems for new projects such as an artificial intelligence-enabled robotic system to assemble and maintain a lunar staging outpost orbiting the moon enabling future exploration missions, human lunar landings, missions to explore Mars and on-orbit servicing of satellites.
Are you ready to launch the next stage of your career in the new space economy? We would love to hear from you!
The Position:
We’re on the hunt for a Senior Mission Systems engineer on our Robotics & Space Operations team at our Houston, TX office. As a Mission Systems engineer you will support development of MDA’s contribution to the Gateway Program - the Gateway External Robotics System (GERS) and ground station facility. There will also be opportunities to support existing International Space Station operations and engineering. This is a diverse role that will have you working with key stakeholders - while participating in ISS & Lunar Gateway forums, panels, working groups and boards onsite at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
Duties include:
- Acting as Mission Operations expert - ensuring operational requirements are properly accounted for and addressed on the GERS program
- Develop high level training and certification requirements for flight and ground personnel operating the GERS system
- Helping to design and develop GERS mission planning tools such as:
-
- Implementation of autonomy scripts, either at the executive or functional level: incorporating the precondition checks and built-in Fault-Detection, Fault-Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) /contingency responses at both levels of abstraction Automated view planning: given an object of interest in the world, determine which camera and at what pan/tilt setting it can best be viewed
- Real-time health monitoring: software to ensure an agent is "watching" even when humans are not
- Path planning automation and optimization
- Providing systems engineering, integration advice and oversight for Gateway external robotics
- Direct support to and representation of our Canadian Space Agency customer to promote successful integration of robotic systems onto the Gateway
- Dynamic negotiation and problem solving with Gateway Partners (international and domestic), NASA, and their contractors
- Duties may be tailored to specific candidates with strong backgrounds, preferably in aerospace robotics
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in either Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Applied Mathematics. Masters degree preferred
- Five or more years operating or controlling mission critical space assets (ideally robotics)
- Knowledge of robotic systems and MSS operations is an asset
- Ability to be proactive, bridge gaps, enhance communication and network across varied governments, contractors, and between programs at MDA across multiple geographic sites
All candidates must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to receive access to government facilities.
We’re a dream team of purpose-driven, collaborative, and passionate people, and we are constantly looking for others to join #TeamMDA to ignite new and innovative approaches to problem-solving that push us forward to improve life on and above Earth. If you’re excited to expand our place in space and driven to inspire the next generation, we’ll take you there.
MDA is an equal opportunity employer prizing diversity and inclusion. We are committed to treating all employees and applicants for employment with respect and dignity. If you require assistance and/or reasonable accommodation due to a disability during the application or the recruiting process we can assist.
