Job Description Qualifications:

Boeing Defense, Space and Security is seeking an Associate, Mid-level, or Lead Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) Engineer to join our Experimental Systems Group (ESG).  Activities include GN&C design, analysis, verification and testing for atmospheric flight and space environments. This position is located in Seal Beach, CA. ESG supports a variety of government customers spanning technology domains, and is an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment specializing in delivering new capabilities to customers rapidly and affordably. The ESG portfolio consists of a range of platforms and technologies including the X-37B, the world’s first fully autonomous reusable spaceplane. 

As a member of our GN&C team, you will join a highly experienced and mission-focused team of engineers with specialties including hypersonic re-entry, spacecraft and aircraft GN&C, as well as new concepts in mission planning, precision maneuver and spacecraft autonomy. We work closely with Business Development teams and our customers. We rapidly prototype new concepts then deploy and iterate our designs and systems. As an engineer working in this area you will typically be engaged across multiple projects and involved in simulation development, system analysis, GN&C requirements and software development, integration, operational concept development, and flight test in both atmospheric and space environments. Our development timelines are aggressive and you will be asked to develop solutions to previously unsolved problems.

An ideal candidate has a strong technical background in aerodynamics and/or astrodynamics, space environment and spacecraft operational knowledge, solid fundamentals in linear algebra, experience with simulation and mathematical modeling, is comfortable with MATLAB and Simulink, and has experience with C/C++ or is generally proficient in programming languages. You will need to be able to work effectively in broad, minimally-defined design spaces.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs and documents design and analysis of Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) models and tools.
  • Gathers, defines and documents system level requirements to support flight control and mission or trajectory requirements.
  • Supports troubleshooting of routing operational anomalies, functional tests and services incidents.
  • Executes tests, performs analysis or simulation and design review per FAA, MIL-SPEC and NASA guidance to deliver a compliant product.
  • Supports development of solutions and disposition of issues to assure customer satisfaction.
  • Participates in new business development efforts.
  • Works under general supervision.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

Work Authorization:

This position requires a current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) (U.S. Citizenship required) or requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.     

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 3+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with Astrodynamics
  • 1+ years’ experience using MATLAB or Simulink
  • Experience with in spacecraft dynamics and orbit analysis.
  • Experience operating in aerospace environments.
  • Experience working with classical and modern control theory/design/analysis
  • Experience with aerodynamics.
  • Experience working with navigation controls (Kalman filters, GPS/INS, state determination, attitude estimation).

Typical Education/Experience:

Associate (Level 2):

Bachelor's degree and typically 2 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Mid-Level (Level 3):

Bachelor's degree and typically 5 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 3 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Lead (Level 4):

Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range for associate level: 88,400 – 119,600

Summary pay range for mid-level: 108,800 – 147,200

Summary pay range for lead level: 135,150 – 182,850
