REQUIREMENT 

Nondestructive Inspection technician working to develop and apply nondestructive inspection technologies and solutions to solve to material and structural integrity challenges for US Air Force (USAF) systems in advanced development, production, or sustainment phases.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute Nondestructive Inspection (NDI) testing and analysis in support of failure analysis investigations.  
  • Document findings in reports and presentations
  • Develop, prototype, and demonstrate inspection solutions to address critical, near-term inspection needs to ensure USAF system safety and availability
  • Explore and evaluate advance NDI technologies for potential implementation by the USAF 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Required experience

  • NAS 410 NDT Level 3, or military 7-level, for at least 5 years in UT and ET 
  • NAS 410 NDT Level 2 or 3 with minimum 3 years inspecting aerospace components 
  • Minimum 5 years hands-on experience with ultrasonic immersion NDT methods and equipment, and ultrasonic contact straight and angle beam NDT methods and equipment
  • Minimum 3 years hands-on experience with surface eddy current NDT methods and equipment
  • Demonstrated experience developing and transitioning UT and ET NDT inspection techniques, including instrument and sensor selection, creating calibration procedures, validating inspections, and writing inspection procedures

 Desired experience

  • Ultrasonic phased array inspection
  • Bolt hole (or open hole) and array eddy current inspection on aerospace components
  • Troubleshooting and maintaining NDT equipment and systems, including multi-axis motion systems and data acquisition / digitizing equipment

Required skills

  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret industry standards, component blueprints, inspection procedures, and apply the appropriate NDT inspections
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret aerospace component drawings and apply the appropriate NDT inspections
  • Experience in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Understanding of material science and manufacturing concepts, especially for aerospace metals and composites

Ability to use basic laboratory equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators
 
Desired Skills

  • Experience working on Department of Defense contracts and on-site customer support for DOD laboratories
  • Experience with MatLab, SolidWorks, Imagine3D, CIVA, programming languages (Python)

EDUCATIONAL, CLEARANCE AND CERTIFICATION

Required education and certifications

  • Current NAS 410 NDT Level 2 or 3 certification in UT and ET for 5 years or more
  • Individuals previously certified or capable of immediate NAS 410 NDT Level UT and ET certification may be considered
  • Current ASNT NDT Level III certification in UT and ET for 5 years or more may be considered
  • Must be US Citizen and able to obtain Secret security clearance

Desired education and certifications

  • NDT Level 2 or 3 certifications in other NDT methods:  MT, RT, and/or UT 
  • Understanding of the underlying the principles of ultrasonic and eddy current inspections 

PHYSICAL/WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Full-time, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio (WPAFB) 40 hours per week, 5 days a week
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs
  • Must be able to obtain WPAFB access 
  • Must be proficient in working successfully in a team environment
  • Must be able to interact with a broad range of customers
  • Must be able to work independently with a minimum of guidance and consultation
  • Must be willing to cross-train in other NDT methods and provide support in other NDT methods not currently certified in and with other technical tasks as assigned

TRAVEL

  • Occasional travel may be required (5-10 percent) and will be performed will be under the guidelines of Federal Travel Regulations and/or Joint Travel Regulations.
