Duties

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Perform research and technology development in the areas of advanced communications network architectures, protocols, and aeronautical-based technology applications.
  • Identify, design, develop, and validate new architectures, components, systems/sub-systems for integration and networking to support aerospace systems and environments. Validation can include analytical, test, demonstration and/or measurement.
  • Develop prototype space and aeronautical system/architecture simulations, emulations, channel models, and demonstrations in a laboratory or relevant environment.
  • Conduct specialized studies on flight vehicles, which may include overall and individual major systems components, and additional airborne equipment encompassed in the structure, to ensure their safety, suitability, and effectiveness in operation.
  • Investigate phenomena encountered in aerospace flight, monitoring, and analyzing unknown or unfamiliar aerospace vehicles, piloting aerospace vehicles (crewed and uncrewed), and/or developing aviation safety standards and regulations.
  • Develop new analytical capability and tools, technology products, subsystems, and systems for space and aeronautical applications.
  • Work independently and in teams to solve technical problems. May lead research or development task areas in support of larger projects.
  • Perform multiple functions such as planning, research, design, development, test and evaluation, cost analyses, program and project management.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.


To qualify at the GS-13 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:
  • Assisting in defining and/or developing electronic communications, networking systems, components, and/or simulations for data exchange environments in space and/or aerospace applications;
  • Utilizing programming applications such as C, C++, Python, MATLAB, etc., or other relevant software programming languages to support space and/or aerospace applications;
  • Assisting in the analysis and/or design of space flight, aeronautical flight, and/or experimental aircraft/aircraft systems or components.
To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
  • Defining and/or developing electronic communications, networking systems, and/or components, and/or simulations for data exchange environments in space and/or aerospace applications;
  • Developing with software programming applications such as C, C++, Python, MATLAB, etc., and/or other relevant software programming languages, and/or hardware integrations, and/or other communications techniques to support space and/or aerospace applications;
  • Analyzing, designing, and/or operating space flight systems, aeronautical flight systems, and/or experimental aircraft/aircraft systems operating throughout the Earth's atmosphere.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
