Job description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building the sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the Lunar Surface.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers, you will join our Guidance team within the Guidance, Navigation, and Controls (GN&C) IPT. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of the development of advanced guidance algorithms. You will be responsible for guidance analyses and trade studies, verifying subsystem requirements, applying Model Based Development practices to build GN&C flight software, and supporting the full lifecycle of GN&C subsystem design through flight completion. You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Development and deliver guidance solutions for the next phase of Lunar Transportation and Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD).
  • Apply innovative techniques to guidance algorithm and FSW development to accomplish sophisticated mission objectives
  • Conduct early feasibility studies, development of subsystem architecture, definition of subsystem and component trade space, and concept of operations
  • Support the derivation and development of subsystem requirements
  • Conduct analyses and trades to validate requirements
  • Collaborate closely with external partners and other subsystems engineers to support the development of subsystem boundaries, interfaces, and performance
  • Develop simulations and tools vital for analysis and verification of subsystem functionalities
  • Auto-generate flight software code in a Model Based Development environment
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, system certification, and flight readiness activities, and real-time flight support during missions
  • Mentor and train junior engineers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering or related technical subject area
  • 4+ years proven experience in guidance algorithm development specifically for trajectory design, trajectory optimization, and onboard guidance implementation
  • Experience developing RPO trajectories.
  • Demonstrated experience with guidance law design for space vehicles
  • Familiarity with development of requirements, interfaces, trades and analyses for aerospace GN&C applications
  • Expertise in Matlab/Simulink
  • Robust understanding of software development and data configuration management techniques
  • Experience in configuration management tools such as Subversion, GIT, PVCS, etc
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Aerospace Engineering or related technical subject area
  • 6+ years experience in the development, implementation, and testing of guidance algorithm development for aerospace vehicles
  • Experience developing RPO trajectories and guidance algorithms for space vehicles operating in LEO, GEO, and NRHO.
  • Familiarity with different guidance schemes such as Lambert, Powered-Explicit-Guidance (PEG), Powered-Descent-Guidance, Lunar Convex Guidance, etc
  • Experience with the GN&C integration of manual control and piloting
  • Demonstrated experience with disciplined convex programming (DCP) including second-order cone programs (SOCP)
  • Experience with guidance law design and constraints for lunar landers
  • Proficient in stochastic and real-time trajectory optimization for spacecraft
  • Experience with lunar lander vehicle design considerations, especially different GN&C architectures accommodating manual control
  • Experience working with GN&C sensors and actuators on spacecraft
  • Experience synthesizing and evaluating Monte Carlo simulations, hardware-in-the-loop, and software-in-the-loop testing
  • Experience in spaceflight GN&C on-orbit operations and/or ground support
  • Willingness to pursue publishing in professional and academic journals
  • Demonstrated professional working relationships with key NASA GN&C technical authorities
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Confluence and JIRA
