Description
Avionics and GNC Technology Engineer in the Guidance Navigation and Control Section, GNC, AOCS and Pointing Division, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
The Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) Section provides functional support to ESA projects in the technical field of GNC systems for planetary exploration orbiters and landers, launch and transportation systems, re-entry vehicles, and new-generation space vehicles for in-orbit servicing, in-orbit assembly, debris removal and for specialised applications such as rendezvous and formation flying.
For your first assignment as Guidance Navigation and Control System Engineer, you will support the Core Future Launchers Preparatory Unit (STS-FF) within the Future Space Transportation Preparation Department of the Directorate of Space Transportation.
You will support the ramping up of system and service-oriented projects to be implemented in the roadmap for future space transportation preparation.
Duties
• Devising technical consolidation and programmatic build-up to reach TRL6 and IRL 3 for identified avionics and GNC technologies
• Drafting statements of work for the relevant FLPP technology activities, with internal support and technical assistance, and supporting the subsequent bidding process
• Managing and participating in the evaluation of tender submissions, negotiation and the implementation of the corresponding contracts, in collaboration with the Procurement Department and other relevant ESA departments
• Organising and supporting negotiations of the contracts with industry
• Managing the relevant contracted activities, including deliverable assessment, project reviews and timely delivery of technological developments
• Supporting FLPP-wide system and technology activities in particular for avionics and GNC, especially for the drafting of requirements, and development of the synergies between technology activities and the demonstrators, or with the space transportation developments
• Involvement in drafting relevant programmatic documents such as roadmaps, work plans, procurement proposals and programme proposals
• Assessing the needs and potential of new technologies for space transportation both within and beyond Europe
• Coordinating activities performed in collaboration with European industry and academia, promoting ESA’s activities to students/researchers/universities and stimulating cross-fertilisation and new ideas
• Providing appropriate support to the FLPP Core Programme Manager
• Providing support for Future Space Transportation Preparation technology and demonstration roadmaps in collaboration with the flagship demonstrator team, with respect to system concept needs, and in particular for avionics and GNC aspects
• Supporting diversification of space transportation stakeholders through spin-in/spin-off in order to strengthen the Future Space Transportation Preparation technology and demonstration roadmap
• Supporting the organisation of FIRST! (Open Competition calls for Technology Disruptors maturation) procurement actions, and the organisation of events in this domain
• Communicating, when relevant, the outcome of technology maturations, internally in ESA and externally at workshops and conferences
• Preparing and organising the required reviews/key points.
You will be assisted by project control, contracts, legal and quality staff and supported by engineers from the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality, and from national agencies within the FLPP Technical Assistance scheme

Education
A master's in the avionics/GNC engineering discipline with experience in the space sector is required.
Additional requirements
• Professional experience in avionics and guidance, navigation and control (GNC) in the space transportation industry
• Knowledge of the European and global space transportation sectors including industry
• Technical knowledge of space transportation systems and innovative technologies with a particular focus on avionics and GNC for space transportation
• Competence in establishing technology roadmaps and experience of academic, public/private space transportation R&D is also a plus
• Demonstrated project technical lead experience
• Demonstrated negotiating skills
• Experience of motivating and developing a cross-cutting team including non-ESA staff and trainees
• Managing multiple team locations is an asset for the position
• The ability to work autonomously in an international environment; anticipate problems, reach solution-oriented, pragmatic and timely decisions of a high standard and integrity as well as to support others (team members, upper management, other stakeholders) in this process.
