Spectrolab, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, has an exciting opportunity available with the Spectrolab Team for a Computer Aided Design (CAD) & Tooling Manager in our Sylmar, CA facility.
Spectrolab manufactures space solar power assemblies that power satellites, the International Space Station, and the Juno spacecraft amongst many others in its 67-year history. Spectrolab solar cells lead and have led the way in power conversion of space solar illumination to electrical power on yesterday’s and today’s solar-powered space vehicles. Spectrolab also manufactures high intensity airborne searchlights that were first introduced in the 1970’s and continue to be the standard of excellence for these important tools used on first responder air frames throughout the world.
As the leader of the CAD & Tooling Design Engineering team, you will manage a team of product and tooling designers and mechanical engineers, and will hold primary responsibility and accountability for accuracy and conformance of all design models and drawings to AS9100 standards across our entire current and development product portfolio for both Photovoltaic and Illuminations Products.
The selected individual will also participate in several weekly coordination meetings to ensure ongoing support of programs per schedule and budget baselines and coordinate or personally provide needed backfill support for team mates during absences due to planned or unplanned PTO.
Position Responsibilities:
- Assign the necessary resources to support timely drawing generation and release for programs, internal development projects and new product qualification activities, and assist as needed with proposal layouts and graphics
- Work with team to ensure that the final released drawings or procurement sketches for development products meet both customer and internal manufacturability requirements within qualified baselines and in conformance to AS9100 standards
- Ensure first time quality and reduce documentation churn by maintaining an efficient but robust drawing review and check process
- Uphold internal Technology Change Process & Boeing Safety standards by ensuring all new Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Designs are subject to the appropriate level of gated review and approval
- Partner with other departments in Spectrolab to improve efficiency of information flow feeding drawing and tooling design requirements
- Evaluate Model Based Engineering (MBE) solutions for applicability to Spectrolab product and processes and developing common sense approaches and methods to enhance both the quality and usefulness of generated designs within budgetary and schedule constraints
- Develop and maintain department processes to enable efficient on-ramping of additional staff as needed and to minimize gaps in knowledge transfer
- Identify individual and team development projects and act as a role model and mentor by inspiring the team to drive continuous improvements in design/design process, safety, quality, manufacturability, cost, and schedule
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
- 2+ years’ experience creating 3D part geometry, drawings, and assemblies using CAD based tools
- 3+ years of experience using Autodesk Pro Suite (AutoCAD, Inventor, VAULT)
- 1+ years’ experience in reading, interpreting, and generating electrical schematics and technical specifications
- 1+ years’ experience with 2D AutoCAD program for design work including block parts, layer structure, etc.
- Experience working with AS9100 and/or similar Quality Management System (QMS) standard
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
- 10+ years of designing production support tooling from tightly tolerance alignment fixtures to large GSE structures
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques, such as additive manufacturing or WEDM
- Certification or degree in mechanical engineering or design
- Applied GD&T experience
- Experience working with suppliers and / or customers to resolve design conflicts or manufacturability issues
- Familiarity with gated approach to product & process development and Aerospace industry and/or FAA material and qualification requirements (such as AIAA-S-111/112, NASA-STD-6016, and/or equivalent ECSS standards, RTCA DO160, etc.)
- Familiarity with developing and/or identifying and implementing targeted process automation or other continuous improvement initiatives for both production and production support environments
