Our team and mission
This position is based at the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) - Frascati, Italy
The Enterprise Section in the Green Solutions Division of EO Science, Applications and Climate based at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, is responsible for:
- Stimulating new industrial capabilities for Earth Observation applications and services including new datasets, new processing methods (new algorithms, AI based methods etc) and exploitation of new technologies (eg fast database structures, IoT sensor networks etc)
- Leveraging opportunities to embed EO based information applications and services within new industrial market sectors
- Testing and verifying new methods for providing EO based services (eg using platform based environments within multi-sided market structures
- Addressing structural impediments constraining operational use of EO based information services (eg specification of engineering best practices in target markets)
The team work primarily with innovative start-ups and SMEs as well as the EO exploitation teams within large system companies, geospatial information teams within operational private and public sector entities and with combinations of research and private sector operators at the forefront of new processing and analysis methodologies

Field(s) of activity for the internship
Topic: Multi-dataset EO Application Development and Testing
As an intern, you will work to develop novel information extraction methods based on the appropriate selection of data from Sentinel 1 and 2, Iceye, and Planet systems as well as relevant transponder data, economic data and in-situ measurements.
Other satellite datasets may also be considered but these should be agreed in advance of the Internship period to ensure the required access during the time period of the work. The priority application areas to be addressed include the development of indicators to characterize economic activity (eg port activity, steel/cement production, finished goods production), the development change detection based characterization of illegal activities (eg illegal mining, illegal waste dumping, unlicensed deforestation, at sea transfers), characterization of environment-dependent pathways for vector borne disease and monitoring risks associated with choke points in global Sea Lanes of Communication.

Education
You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.
Additional requirements
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
Additional Requirements:
- Some familiarity with SAR and multi-spectral image processing
- Python/MATLAB
