Job description
Here at The Exploration Company we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit, and which carries cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.
We want you as a talented Radiation & Components Engineer to help us in our mission by ensuring the design, development, and performance of electronic components and systems in environments where radiation exposure is a concern.
You will be successful in this role if you are able to help us:
- Evaluating the radiation environment based on our mission profiles
- Evaluating and mitigating the impact of this radiation environment on electronic components
- Selecting components compliant with the radiation, thermal and mechanical environments
Key Responsibilities
In your capacity as a Radiation and components Engineer, your role will be continuously evolving, but day to day your duties will include:
- Radiation Environment Evaluation :
- Evaluate the radiation environment based on the mission profiles (orbits, mission duration, …).
- Radiation Analysis and Mitigation:
- Conduct radiation analysis on electronic components and systems to identify potential vulnerabilities.
- Develop and implement strategies to mitigate the effects of radiation, including shielding, redundancy, and error correction techniques.
- Component Selection and Testing:
- Evaluate and select electronic components suitable for operation in radiation-intensive environments, taking into account the other environmental constraints (mechanical and thermal environment)
- Collaborate with suppliers to ensure components meet specified radiation requirements.
- Perform testing and qualification of components for radiation resistance.
- System Design:
- Contribute to the design of electronic systems for space, aerospace, or other high-radiation environments.
- Quality Assurance:
- Establish and implement quality assurance processes to verify the characteristics of components and systems.
- Develop testing protocols to validate the performance of components and systems in simulated radiation environments.
- Monitor and manage product change notifications (PCNs) from component suppliers, assessing their impact on current and future systems.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, systems engineers, and project managers.
- Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Documentation:
- Create and maintain detailed documentation related to radiation analysis, component selection, and system design.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Continuous Learning:
- Stay abreast of industry advancements and emerging technologies in electronics compatible with radiation environment
- Continuously improve and update knowledge and skills related to radiation and components engineering.
What we would love to see from you
In the role of Radiation & Components Engineer ideally, you will have the following:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Proven experience in radiation analysis and mitigation for electronic systems.
- Familiarity with space and aerospace industry standards and requirements.
- Proficiency in relevant simulation tools and software.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Experience with FPGA and ASIC design for applications operating in a radiation environment
- Knowledge of relevant standards such as MIL-STD-883, and ECSS standards.
- Familiarity with radiation testing facilities and methodologies.
- Previous experience in the space or aerospace industry.
Why you should join us
What makes us special here at The Exploration Company and why we think you will enjoy working here is:
- We’re Agile - we make decisions fast whilst keeping our goals and systems in mind
- We’re Open and Collaborative - we are transparent about risks and obstacles, so that we can cooperate to overcome them
- We have a lot of Fun - we refuel our energy knowing we are democratising space. It’s a wonderful and rare opportunity, are YOU up for the challenge?
