Job description

Here at The Exploration Company we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit, and which carries cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.

We want you as a talented Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer to help us in our mission by contributing significantly to Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology, development and in-house production for our Vehicles Nyx Earth and Nyx Moon.

You will be successful in this role if you are able to help us:
  • Developing in-house production capabilities in AM and connected post-processing
  • Advancing propulsion and structural applications for our space vehicles
  • Identifying achievable quality improvements in applications
  • Making our applications better in a technological and economic way

Key Responsibilities

In your capacity as an Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer, your role will be continuously evolving, but day to day your duties will include:
  • Working with the AIT and the propulsion engineering team to develop and optimize AM processes
  • Tailoring metal AM processes (e.g. through extensive Design of Experiment methods) to the mechanical and thermal requirements of liquid rocket engines
  • Developing advanced propulsion and structure components to meet aerospace quality standards in a  cost-efficient way
  • Synchronizing and optimising AM software and hardware workflows
  • Optimizing post-processing workflows
  • Supporting deep material characterization and testing procedures
  • Qualifying processes and parts towards aerospace standards for flying parts
  • Supporting component design under the aspects of “Design for Additive Manufacturing” (DfAM)
  • Keeping the company up to date with the industry state of the art, innovations and new processes
  • Supporting the operations in case of anomaly or problem
  • Supporting the ramp up of production on an operational level

What we would love to see from you

In the role of Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer ideally, you will have the following:

  • Profound experience in Additive Manufacturing process development (Laser Powder-bed fusion (L-PBF))
  • Proficiency in developing L-PBF processes for metals, especially Nickel- Copper-, Aluminum- Titanium and Niobium-based alloys
  • Proficiency in data preparation processes for metals, especially developing support structures and conducting mechanical as well as thermal process simulations
  • Hands-on experience with handling L-PBF systems
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in physics, thermodynamics, mechanics and metallurgy
  • Experience in multi-material processes is an asset
  • Experience in space propulsion industry is an asset
  • Experience in other AM processes like SLS, DED or ceramics is an asset
  • Fluent in English. German and French is an asset
