Job description

Turion Space Corp. (TURION) is seeking an Advanced Sensors Engineer to join our team in Irvine, CA. You will help design, implement, and test various sensor systems for TURION’s DROID spacecraft, with a focus on rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) and/or space domain awareness (SDA) data collection. Additionally, you will provide key support for product demonstrations, business development, and outreach activities. Your ability to collaborate in the drafting of proposals, journal and/or conference articles, and attending related events will be hugely beneficial to your new role. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to electrical design and/or software implementation for sensor-related technology development 
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary design and implementation of custom sensor payloads 
  • Develop test plans and procedures, as well as perform testing to verify sensor performance in the space environment 
  • Perform component-level trade studies and define preliminary hardware configurations for a variety of sensor payloads 
  • Work with TURION’s GNC and Flight Software teams to coordinate the usage of relevant sensor systems 
  • Work with team members to define required on-orbit demonstrations for new sensor payloads 
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring additional teammates for our rapidly growing team 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MS or Ph.D.), or BS + 2 years of experience, in a relevant engineering discipline, including but not limited to computer systems engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, and optical engineering 
  • Experience working with, testing, and calibrating advanced electro-optical systems 
  • Good analytical skills and a solid foundation in mathematics 
  • Proficiency with at least one programming language (Python or C++) 
  • Experience working with and/or developing sensors packages for autonomous systems 
  • Able to learn quickly and collaborate with multiple disciplines encompassed within the spacecraft design and testing umbrella 
  • Can quickly adapt to new tools as well as identify and solve new problems with little to no supervision or direction 
  • Be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed 
  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience using PCB design tools 
  • Software testing and verification experience (unit testing and performance verification) 
  • Experience utilizing frameworks for ML/AI, GPU acceleration, or FPGA logic design 
  • Experience implementing sensor fusion algorithms 
  • Astrodynamics simulation experience 
  • Working knowledge of satellite subsystems and components
