This role is a part of Test & Flight Operations team, providing centralized support to Business Units with the focus on design, build and maintenance of the ground systems, test and launch facilities across multiple locations.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers and technicians, you will contribute to the test and operation of NG Avionics Subsystems across GS1/GS2 and the ILV. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of Mission Success of the New Glenn orbital launch vehicle. As a Sr. Launch Vehicle Operations Engineer AV you will report to the Director of New Glenn Launch Vehicle Operations. You will be responsible for processing your assigned vehicle systems, from stage receipt at the launch site through launch and landing. You will help develop and maintain production schedules, budgets, quality documents, and engineering. You will work with other element teams to develop operational requirements and advocate for design-for-operability with the AV IPT.  Conduct AV Product Tree reviews (Element Specs, Component Specs, etc…), assess Operational Requirements for release, and review Launch Commit Criteria.  As a test conductor, you will author detailed procedures and help develop test equipment to complete integrated flight systems testing. As a task leader, you will accomplish your assignments by managing your team (including hourly team members) while ensuring the safety of your crew and your hardware. As a member of the Launch Operations team, you will ensure the launch vehicle and associated ground systems are prepared for launch and flight. To prepare for launch, you will work with Ground, LSAI, S&MA, EHS, Quality, AV Leadership, Stage Leadership and IVT Leadership to ensure Mission Success. You will have the opportunity to earn certification as Launch Controller 1, ultimately responsible for the AV systems across NG during IF Integration & test, Hot-Fire Test Execution, and Day of Launch Operations for NG AV systems. You will determine and correct anomaly causes, often during time-critical operations. After flight, you will perform data reviews and incorporate process improvements.  Additional duties may include but not limited to:  Training and Certifying NG AV Console Operators, working with the NG Sim Team to provide world class simulations for crew training, performing all aspects of Systems Engineering, evaluate AV Problem Reports, NCs, ECRs, and perform Mission Operations Stakeholder Responsibilities for Operations Impacts, and assessing design changes for future Missions. 

 

The ideal candidate has SME level knowledge in AV SE, AV Design, AV Test, AV Operations, launch vehicle operations leadership experience, is highly detail-oriented and future thinking, can manage a broad set of diverse data, has programming experience in QT/Python, ship-side support experience, and has a deep passion for Blue Origin’s mission.  This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.  Passion for our mission and vision is required! 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. Degree in Aerospace, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Math 

  • 8+ years industry experience in Avionics subsystem Design, Test, systems engineering, Integration and/or Operations, launch systems, aerospace, or satellite operations  

  • GPS/INS theory of operation 

  • Minimum of 5+ years of demonstrated field operations, supervising hourly and salary hands-on personnel 

  • Hands-on experience in developing, authoring, and executing integrated tests or operating launch vehicles 

  • Strong operations planning and organizational skills 

  • Effective technical communications capabilities 

  • Ability to support occasional off shift work schedules during launch campaigns 

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion 

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of demonstrated control room or operations experience in a real-time, intense, and high consequence environment 

  • Expert knowledge in GNC Theory:  Inertial Sensors, Kinematics, Kalman Filters, angular rate Quaternion Transform 

  • Expert knowledge in RF Theory and/or operations 

  • Expert knowledge in Electrical Power Rocket Operations 

  • 5+ years extensive experience with HWIL/SWIL/Simulations Test 

  • Programming languages or equivalent: Qt, Simulink, MATLAB, WinPlot, Epsilon, Python 

  • Demonstrated experience writing technical procedures, non-conformance documentation, and specifications 

  • Experience leading and managing teams integrating multiple subsystems to meet a top-level system requirement 

  • Experience with Ethernet/CCDL/RS-422/RS-485 based communication protocols 

  • Strong safety record and mindset, including hands-on experience planning and conducting hazardous or critical tests and operations 

  • Experience leading test teams as a Test Conductor or Test Engineer 

  • Effective project management, budget management, and leadership skills
