The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on development, manufacturing, and operation of satellite systems to address one of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space mobility.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will report to the Director of Spacecraft Avionics for In-Space Systems as the Software Director responsible for software development. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of software development for various projects.

This is both a technical contributor and people manager position.  You will use your expertise to guide the software development effort as well as managing and leading world-class talent.  You will also help define and verify project requirements, plans, and technical documentation, and integrate with groups throughout Blue Origin to promote and ensure industry best practices.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible and accountable for advising the technical team to develop and deliver flight software products that meet mission objectives and satisfy requirements while balancing cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Recruit, hire, manage, and mentor a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team.
  • Lead your direct reports’ professional development including performance evaluations, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations and development opportunities.
  • Perform technical work and provide technical leadership of the highest caliber.
  • Coordinate with SIL and HIL Verification managers to ensure verification plans meet system safety requirements. Provide resources to the verification teams following development.
  • Support product roadmaps, working with internal and external customers to understand how your product meets current and future mission needs.
  • Embody, promote, and mentor the Blue Origin leadership principles and In-Space Systems culture. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10 years of validated experience in software development.
  • 5+ years leading and handling software teams.
  • Experience with spacecraft flight software development and qualification. 
  • Experience with aerospace vehicle development.
  • Demonstrated software engineering skills, particularly with real-time embedded systems and C/C++.
  • Experience in full life cycle software development, including system design and analysis, requirement capture and development, software implementation and verification, system integration, qualification, and releasing.
  • Excellent written, communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary development projects, including managing requirements, priorities, scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Experience developing safety critical products applying NPR 7150.2, DO-178, or other safety-critical software standard.
  • Experience operating integrated hardware-in-the-loop lab environments.
  • Experience with verification, integration, and test, of orbital launch vehicles or human rated spacecraft.
Compensation range for on site WA applicants is
$225,350.30$330,513.70 USD

Paid Time Off:  Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays for all regular employees (including part-time), fixed-term, and interns.

Discretionary bonus: Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay. Bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
