Lunar Transportation: This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.   

As a step towards this vision, Blue Origin is building the next generation of lunar landers. As MK1 Vehicle Lead Systems Engineer you are accountable for the technical design of one of our MK1 Vehicle configurations. The Lead Systems Engineer will lead the technical tasking across the vehicle systems engineering and integrated product teams to define and manage the technical architecture for the vehicle and its associated mission through the entire program lifecycle. In this role you will report to the MK1 Vehicle Director and you will be the primary interface between the Vehicle Director and the rest of the technical team. This position will support all aspects of technical leadership to include prioritization of systems engineering activities across the Integrated Product Teams and AI&T teams. In this role, you will also be expected to apply background expertise to further improve on the implementation of systems engineering processes. Your activities will span system level development, integration and test of the lander through the program Lifecyle

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Technical Authority for a MK1 Lander vehicle
  • Lead technical team product definition and associated tasking to develop and deliver vehicles, systems, and products that meet mission objectives and satisfy requirements.
  • Interface between the Vehicle Director and Technical Team to balance the technical solution against cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Apply heuristic and functional decomposition techniques to scope the design and development of a vehicle based on program objectives.
  • Define and track system budgets and technical performance metrics throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Monitor technical progress, requirements, deliverables, and risks as well as review recommendations for change with program management.
  • Coordinate with Systems Engineering management to define, coordinate, and continuously improve upon systems engineering processes.
  • Technical Leadership at the Vehicle level; able to review the technical work of other system systems and product teams, detect subtle flaws, and provide substantial design improvement recommendations.
  • Able to quickly understand and report on a variety of technical tasks across the team relating to, but not limited to, configuration changes, technical risks, failure root cause assessments, waivers, and other variances against plan.
  • Coordinate with the Vehicle Director, Sales, and other vehicle Lead Systems Engineers to develop, and maintain alignment on, the MK1 product roadmap.
  • Work independently toward long-range objectives without appreciable direction and determine the technical objectives of tasks to develop approaches to technical solutions.
  • Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or related technical subject area
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience designing, integrating, testing and operating space flight vehicle systems
  • Technical Team leadership experience
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or related technical subject area
  • 12+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with the development and execution of a large-scale system integration and verification of autonomous spaceflight systems
  • Experience supporting testbeds for spaceflight systems
  • Demonstrated configuration management experience
Compensation range for on site WA applicants is
$136,467$200,151.60 USD

Paid Time Off:  Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays for all regular employees (including part-time), fixed-term, and interns.

Discretionary bonus: Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay. Bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
