Job description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on development, manufacturing, and operation of satellite systems to address one of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space mobility.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will craft and build avionics systems that will lay the foundation for the future. This role will stretch your creativity and challenge your abilities. The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in circuit design, analysis, simulation, and testing, and lead teams to success. No matter how phenomenal your skills are, you will still face tasks above your current ability. We will ask you to embrace this and grow with us. You will have the satisfaction of working to help build the Road to Space.

In addition, this person will work effectively in a team, collaborating with hardware and software engineers to integrate firmware with other system components. You will need to be able to communicate technical information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Special Mentions

  • Relocation provided
  • Travel expected up to 10-15% of the time

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Architecting circuit designs for space at the circuit card level
  • Develop the Schematics, select the EEE Components, perform Worst Case Circuit Analysis, perform Derating and Parts Stress Analysis, analyze the Power Budget, and perform the Radiation compliance analysis.
  • Guide circuit card development through design phases, from requirements definition to initial integration testing.
  • Collaborate with Blue Programs to establish requirements and design Printed Wiring Board Assemblies (PWBAs) that meet those requirements.
  • Define circuit and circuit card level tasking schedules and work diligently to meet those schedules.
  • Engage in personal technical growth and encourage technical growth in peers and junior engineers.
  • Present your work product to functional and program leadership and participate in risk management discussions.
  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience, explain information and develop skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within the field.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10+ years of Circuit Design experience.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with analog and digital design, analysis, test, and simulation of mixed-signal circuit avionic designs that interact with avionics systems, including sensors and electromechanical/electrohydraulic actuators.
  • Develop, lead, and own digital, analog, and mixed-signal circuit avionic designs, and rugged electronic hardware assemblies throughout the product life cycle.
  • Support avionics controller architecture trade studies, analyses, performance characterization and specification, device selection, and controller roadmap direction.
  • Support controller risk analyses, failure modes effects and criticality analyses (FMECA), design for test/manufacture/cost (DFx), and root-cause analysis of test discrepancies.
  • Participate in program-level technology development, mission assurance and safety initiatives, and avionics development process improvements.
  • Have experience with analog electronics design, including at least four of the following: FET/BJT logic level, op-amp, high/low/band pass filters, clock/data termination, and comparator circuits.
  • Experience guiding drafters through the PCB Layout process, including the layout and routing concerns specific to control electronics.
  • Experience crafting at the circuit card level to meet concerns of adjacent fields, such as thermal, structural, mechanical, reliability, and quality.
  • Experience using and creating electrical design specifications.
  • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the mechanical and electronic assembly product lifecycle.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and foster inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High Voltage Design Experience
  • A Master of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related fields.
  • Experience designing, developing, testing, and operating Space Vehicle Avionics systems.
  • Knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and how to apply this knowledge to designs targeting space applications.
  • Proven experience crafting high-reliability safety-critical, Class 2/3 board assemblies; familiarity with IPC-6012 Class 3, DO-254, and similar standards.
  • Experience with Space Vehicle Avionics systems hardware development, integration, and testing.
  • Scripting, Programming, and Analysis: Experience with TCL, Python, Linux shell, and Windows batch scripting; C/C++; MATLAB/Simulink, HSPICE, and HFSS (or similar modeling/analysis tools).
  • Hands-on experience installing and solving various electronic sensors and components.
  • Knowledge of and experience in space flight computers and controllers; familiarity with analog to digital and digital to analog converters, power supply components and design, batteries, solar cells, RF systems, serial communication, and/or telemetry systems.
  • Familiarity with harnessing and component packaging.
  • Experience with requirements management (DNG or JAMA preferred).
  • Experience developing products from early trade studies through final design, manufacturing, and testing.

Inclusivity Statement

Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
