Job description
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on development, manufacturing, and operation of satellite systems to address one of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space mobility.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, this role will directly impact the history of space exploration by architecting the foundation of the next-generation of in-space data services. This individual will be responsible for developing an in-space network architecture that routes critical data within, between, and through our Space Mobility spacecraft. You will use your familiarity with commercial networking equipment and standards, proficiency in system-level network engineering, and ability to plan and lead project resources while infusing and facilitating creativity and innovation. Ideal candidates have direct experience architecting, developing, and delivering custom network systems used in embedded or mobile applications.
We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to help us redefine spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Special Mentions
- Relocation provided
- Travel encouraged up to 10-15% of the time
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conduct network architecture and design trade studies, assess performance, and lead design reviews
- Own the development of end-to-end network requirements, perform network performance modeling and simulation, define interfaces at the network edges, shape network equipment design requirements, leverage COTS designs for custom space-worthy applications, and perform validation testing
- Lead a multi-disciplinary team in architecting, designing, integrating, and testing of a variety of in-space network equipment
- Serve as the technical focus of all aspects of the network to the system architecture team, the vehicle design teams, and mission operations team
Qualifications
- B.S. degree or higher, or equivalent experience in an applicable field (electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, etc.)
- 7+ years validated ability in design, development, test, and operation of networking hardware
- Direct experience architecting and implementing networking or data routing capabilities for custom applications such as embedded systems, aircraft, automotive, spacecraft, or other related sectors
- Hands-on experience and proficiency deploying networking hardware and software solutions, including working with network test equipment
- Strong background with commercial OSI Layer 2 and 3 switching and routing hardware and software
- In-depth understanding of service provider networking protocols, including Ethernet, multicast, and overlay networking
- Experience across the engineering life cycle, including defining the architecting, performing engineering design trades, establishing requirements, performing bench-top testing, and fielding
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our culture of inclusion
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Desired:
- Familiarity with applying information assurance and cyber security requirements to the architecture and requirements
- Experience with network simulation software (e.g., OPNET), network testing hardware (e.g., traffic generators/analyzers), and real-time operating systems
- Strong understanding of time synchronization protocols and creating robust safety-critical networks (AFDX /ARINC 664 or time-triggered Ethernet)
- Experience crafting requirements for engineering teams working on avionics or board-level designs
Inclusivity Statement
Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
