This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Facilities, and Security. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will lead a passionate and talented team responsible for the precision fabrication of everything from simple tools to high-complexity 5-axis machined rocket parts in a research and development machine shop. You will work closely with internal customers to provide feedback on manufacturability and schedule. In addition to excellent interpersonal skills, you will be required to convey a deep and thorough understanding of machining, the machine shop environment, and of every facet of manufacturing and part processing. Rapid and competent decision making will be crucial as priorities constantly shift in this fast-paced environment. You’ll also be responsible for satellite manufacturing locations including one space dedicated to supporting engineers and technicians working on their projects themselves with basic machines and hand tools.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage regular operations of the R&D Fabrication Shop, a 14,000 square foot machine shop employing 12 machinists and support staff as well as satellite shop locations
- Regularly make quick, high-impact decisions with limited information which may have significant effects on program schedules and budgets
- Collect, analyze, and report on a wide varieties of data and performance metrics on a normal cadence
- Develop near- and long-term planning and budgets in excess of $3M per year
- Initiate and oversee continuous improvement and 5S projects throughout the R&D Shop and satellite locations
- Manage hiring and coordinate the onboarding of new employees
- Conduct regular performance reviews of all direct-reports as well as keeping tag-ups with all employees on a routine basis
- Promote the career growth of all employees and, when necessary, provide corrective or disciplinary action to those employees who require some behavioral adjustment
- Clearly communicate expectations in regular team meetings as well as flowing-down high-level company and shop information
- Work with tooling vendors and machine suppliers to identify, purchase, and install equipment including large machine tools costing $500k or more
- Provide customers with actionable alternative manufacturing solutions, either internal or external, when capacity or capability constraints are present
- Engage directly with internal customers on designs and projects and provide Design for Manufacturability (DfM) feedback
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a machinist, manufacturing engineer, or machine shop manager
- Management experience preferably in a machine shop or an aerospace environment, with responsibility for safety, hiring, training, and budget
- Strong understanding of machine shop fundamentals, processing of complex parts, and multi-axis machining
- Thorough knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, per ASME Y14.5
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and making improvements to machined component design
- Excellent computer skills including MS Office products such as Excel, CAD/CAM software, preferably PTC Creo and Mastercam, and web-based applications such as Jira
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 10+ years as a programmer and machinist
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
- Familiar with industry standards such AS9100
- Experience in coordinating facility modifications and commissioning of new equipment and capabilities
- Thorough knowledge of a wide range of manufacturing processes including, but not limited to, CNC and manual machining including 5-axis technology, additive manufacturing, welding, grinding, forming, electrical discharge machining (EDM), casting, waterjet cutting, sheet metal forming, etc.
- Familiar with post-machining processes such as heat-treatment, brazing, anodizing, precision cleaning, non-destructive testing, and assembly
- Background in quality control and inspection
- Experience in fast-paced R&D environments as well as taking R&D components from early development into production
- Familiar with 5S and lean manufacturing principles

Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays for all regular employees (including part-time), fixed-term, and interns.
Discretionary bonus: Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay. Bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
