About the Role

The Director of Manufacturing is responsible for the leadership and execution of Phantom Space’s manufacturing engineering, quality, and supply chain/procurement functions.  The Director ensures the effective and efficient use of facilities and staff to meet company and customer deadlines for Phantom’s growth and a dynamic space transportation economy.  The Director of Manufacturing works collaboratively with launch system (flight and ground systems) design engineers, spacecraft design engineers, test and launch teams, and company business functions to ensure the cost-effective and on-time delivery of highly quality hardware.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversees and participates in the recruitment, hiring, and training of manufacturing employees.
  • Oversees schedules and assignments for direct reports.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Handles discipline of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.
  • Provides leadership for problem resolution to facilitate fast improvements and improved working relationships.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversees the manufacture of hardware, ensuring production, performance, and quality standards are consistently met.
  • Ensures compliance with Phantom standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, OSHA, safety, and FAA & launch site requirements. 
  • Ensures hardware is completed on-time, of high quality, and with cost efficiency.
  • Evaluates and approves drawings, specs, and other technical documents; provides feedback to aid manufacturability.
  • Identifies and manages external-supplier sources, -produced sources, materials, and hardware.
  • Supports procurement team, including quoting of materials and hardware receiving inspections.
  • Ensures a healthy and safe working environment, and compliance with federal and state regulations, through collaboration with environmental, health, and safety staff.
  • Assists Chief Operations Officer and executive team with long-range manufacturing goals, expansion efforts, and implementation of new technology.
  • Identifies and shares training opportunities for staff to build and improve skills.
  • Organizes departmental management structure and teams for optimal, efficient operations.
  • Identify, communicate, and drive implementation of capital investments and improvement projects and operating budget.
  • Delivers progress and production reports to executive team members as requested.
  • Supervises equipment purchase, maintenance, and layout.
  • Manage material requirements to increase inventory turns and reduce levels on hand
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and managerial skills.
  • Thorough understanding of the policies and practices used in the manufacturing division.
  • Ability to set long-term goals and communicate them to others.
  • Ability to motivate and organize multiple efforts to accomplish goals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering and/or aerospace integrated system design.
  • Familiarity with space system hardware fabrication and test activities.
  • Familiarity with integration of liquid rocket propulsion systems highly desired.
  • Proficient in CAD design tools. (Onshape & Solidworks preferred)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings or schematics, including GD&T.
  • Hardware acceptance, environmental, & design verification testing experience.
  • Excellent communication skills within a cross-functional team environment.

ITAR Requirements: This position requires compliance with U.S. Government space technology trade restrictions, specifically the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and additional regulations governing satellite, launch vehicle, missile, and other related technologies.  All jobs restricted by these regulations will be contingent upon the applicant’s status as a documented U.S. Person or their ability to receive a trade license from the cognizant government agency; in addition to any required company background checks and in compliance with applicable U.S. laws.  Similarly, positions requiring the ability to work on government contracts or a security clearance are also contingent upon the applicants ability to receive the appropriate clearance and be allowed to work on U.S. government contracts.
