As a Staff Optical Engineer, you will:
• Perform optical design and analysis and determine ability of designed optical systems to meet specifications
• Work with Systems Engineering to write requirements and perform system level design and decomposition into optical system requirements
• Lead development of materials for program technical reviews and present data throughout the product development and maturation processes to assure the customer that the optical payloads and optical components with specific characteristics are within specified requirements and will perform according to specifications
• Lead procurement of optical components to specification to meet performance goals of an optical system
• Report progress periodically to program leadership and external customers.
• Support spacecraft integration within a program coordinating across multiple disciplines to ensure requirements verification
• Participate as a subject matter expert (SME) in failure investigations and anomaly resolution boards
• Work with Certified Principal Engineers (CPEs), Responsible System Engineers (RSEs), designers, and test engineers to ensure smooth integration at the system level
This role is Part-Time only to start and may have the ability to go full-time.
Role is located at either our Louisville, CO or Sunnyvale, CA campuses.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelors degree in optical engineering, physics, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience designing and procuring tactical or space-based optical systems
• Experience with integration, test, characterization, and/or verification of optical systems
• Experience designing complex optical systems using Zemax, Code V, OSLO, or similar software
• Must have a DoD Secret, Top Secret, or TS/SCI
Desired Skills:
• Active TS/SCI security clearance
• Experience in optical theory and design including geometrical optics, physical optics, Fourier optics, radiometry, interferometry, and adaptive optics
• Experience performing stray light analysis using FRED and communicate necessary optical subsystem designs AND/OR changes needed to meet requirements
• Knowledge of how to design optical systems for ground support testing and space flight
• Experience deriving requirements and writing specifications for optical systems based on customer requirements
• Experience writing specification and statements of work and successful procurement of complex optical components
• Experience working with other spacecraft vehicle subsystems to ensure requirements meet overall mission CONOPs
• Experience working with ground support equipment for verification of optical payload alignment and calibration requirements
• Demonstrated ability to perform environmental tests on optical system including vibration testing, thermal vacuum testing, and performance testing.
• Experience leading a technical team to develop and field optical systems

Pay Rate:
The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, or Washington is $109,500 - $209,900. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
