About the Role

Phantom is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design and implement test systems for qualification, acceptance, and integration testing of avionics hardware.  You will take ownership of the design and implementation of hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) test systems, as well as special-purpose test setups to fully exercise avionics hardware during environmental qualification testing.  This role requires proficiency in software development to build test scripts and analyze test data in addition to an electrical engineering background to understand the hardware under test.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing HITL test setups for launch vehicles, satellites, support equipment, and subsystems thereof, from initial concept through implementation
  • Developing specialized automated test setups to exercise avionics hardware during environmental testing
  • Working closely with the avionics hardware and flight software teams to understand design requirements, and contribute to writing test plans and establishing pass/fail criteria to ensure sufficient test coverage is achieved
  • Contribute to design reviews for avionics hardware and flight software, to provide a design-for-test perspective and maintain deep context on the development efforts
  • Performing trade studies to find the best design approaches and component selections to solve challenging problems in test system designs
  • Designing wire harness assemblies necessary to interconnect test setup hardware, and working with internal technicians and external vendors to have them manufactured
  • Writing test reports, communicating test results to company leadership and internal teams
  • Keeping immediate supervisor up to date on all projects, with regards to project status, completion time, and any problems that may have arisen during the course of the project
  • Performing other related duties as required


Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field, or equivalent
  • Preferred 5+ years professional experience, or 2+ years experience working directly on avionics test systems
  • Proven ability to take ownership of project success and see work through to completion
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering practices and principles
  • Proficiency with Python
  • Experience with real-time test software and automated control of test hardware, such as data acquisition systems, power supplies, and sensor emulators
  • Proficiency with basic soldering and crimping tools; SMT soldering skills are a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be a self-starter, able to decompose moderately complex projects into individual tasks and processes


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, building and operating HITL test setups for avionics applications
  • Experience with environmental qualification and acceptance testing of avionics hardware
  • Familiarity with sensors and test equipment such as strain gauges, pressure transducers, thermocouples, and thermistors
  • Electronics lab experience: familiarity with equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and power supplies, and using such equipment to debug electronics hardware
  • Expertise with Linux operating system and command line
  • In addition to Python, proficiency in C/C++, MATLAB or LabView
  • Familiarity with any/all of: MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, compliance with RCC 319 and RCC 324

ITAR Requirements: This position requires compliance with U.S. Government space technology trade restrictions, specifically the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and additional regulations governing satellite, launch vehicle, missile, and other related technologies.  All jobs restricted by these regulations will be contingent upon the applicant’s status as a documented U.S. Person or their ability to receive a trade license from the cognizant government agency; in addition to any required company background checks and in compliance with applicable U.S. laws.  Similarly, positions requiring the ability to work on government contracts or a security clearance are also contingent upon the applicants ability to receive the appropriate clearance and be allowed to work on U.S. government contracts.
