Salary: £55,000 - £70,000 depending on experience

Who are you?

As a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will be an enthusiastic, self-starting individual who is happy to work on a range of activities from technical studies to small spacecraft systems and subsystems. You will be comfortable working as part of a team to deliver projects to a variety of customers including institutional, academic and commercial organisations.

You will have some experience in designing, developing, building and testing satellite missions, together with a willingness to learn and the ability to work with others to identify and resolve technical issues.

You will be Educated to at least degree-level or equivalent in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline; preferably Mechanical or Aerospace engineering and have experience in some of the following areas;

  • Systems Engineering on a small satellite programme, or complex subsystem on a larger project, preferably across the full project lifecycle;
  • Technical delivery of complex systems, software and/or electronic hardware;
    Spacecraft / SQM AIT;
  • Delivery of space technology and/or space mission studies or R&D projects;
  • Technical pre-sales support during bid activity;
  • Working in and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Interfacing to external clients;
  • Reporting project progress to internal stakeholders;
  • Working with suppliers, particularly managing sub-contractor consultants;
  • Knowledge of Space Standards (i.e. ECSS);
  • Knowledge of UK Space Industry.

SKILLS

  • Familiarity with a CAD package for both modelling and drawing, ideally solidworks (including ePDM). But similar products such as Fusion 360 and Solid Edge also considered.
  • Ability to rapidly generate new layouts / configurations to support bids and proposals, using a common set of components to meet the specific requirements.
  • Familiarity with interpreting the requirements presented in launch vehicle user manuals.
  • Strong understanding of methods and approaches for spacecraft level mechanical testing, including supporting standards such as NASA GEVS.
  • Appreciation of requirements of other subsystems that impact the mechanical design / layout of spacecraft e.g.. thermal, micro-vibration, AOCS
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbal;
  • Confident working in project delivery and bid teams.
  • Ability to work closely with and interpret the outputs of analysis engineers (FEA) to understand the capabilities of the design.

Desirable:

  • Experience with a FEM package (Nastran etc).
  • Understanding of a range of machining methods and processes for manufacture of components.
  • Ability to interpret and create high quality mechanical drawings, taking into account GD&T.
  • A basic understanding in general programming/scripting, e.g., Python, Java, C/C++.

What will you be doing here?

As a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for working on microsatellites weighing 40-250kg. The role will involve the mechanical engineering tasks involved in the development and launch of payloads, structural design and analysis, hardware selection, testing and validation, and interaction with our customers.

The role requires some knowledge and experience of designing, developing, building and testing satellite missions, a willingness to learn and the ability to work with others to identify and resolve technical issues. The right attitude is equally as important as background and experience.

While the primary responsibilities of the role lie in project delivery, the role may require some bid support and other reasonable responsibilities as required by the business. You will be actively encouraged to maintain a current interest in space industry developments and are expected to pro-actively identify business/technology promotion opportunities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Co-ordinating and managing technical inputs to spacecraft mechanical design and development from internal and external parties including (but not limited to):

-Payload providers;
-Sub-contractors and suppliers (including launch providers);
-Users;
-Customers;
-Regulatory authorities;.
-Budget (including MoI and CoG tracking);

  • Supporting the definition, design, and build of MGSE.
  • Management and execution of Validation and Verification activities at a subsystem and system level (including lab testing).
  • Collaboration with project managers to provide inputs to schedules; risk management plans; budget management and other project artefacts as required
  • Plan and manage own work in-line with project requirements

Depending on your level of experience, you will report to the Mechanical and Thermal Systems Group Lead and your work will be prioritized in discussion with them.

We also offer ‘Space as a Service’ by flying customer payloads on our spacecraft and by providing customers the ability to upload digital applications to operate on our hardware. The company was acquired by BAE Systems in 2021 but continues to operate as a separate business with our offices and satellite cleanrooms located in Alton, Hampshire in the UK.
